The Copiosa Redenção sisters said the moment was spontaneous—and that music and movement are already part of their work with young people and people struggling with addiction.
Who are the beatboxing nuns?
Marizele Cassiano and Marisa de Paula are members of the Sisters of the Copious Redemption, known in Portuguese as Copiosa Redenção. The Catholic congregation was founded in 1989 by Redemptorist Father Wilton Lopes in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, where the sisters live, according to OSV News, published by The Catholic Register. Its ministries include rehabilitation work with people facing drug or alcohol addiction, artistic outreach and vocation promotion.
Their backgrounds in music and dance differ. In the same report, Marizele said she grew up singing with her family and developed mouth-sound techniques as a teenager without formal beatboxing lessons. Marisa described learning traditional local rhythms, taking ballet and street-dance classes, and learning tap and break dance while working with children and teens at a cultural centre.
What happened on Pai Eterno television?
The sisters appeared on the program Família de Amor while discussing a vocational retreat or encounter. They sang about religious vocation: Marizele beatboxed, Marisa danced, and presenter Deacon Giovani Bastos joined in. OSV News dates the appearance to May 20, 2025; the Associated Press and Euronews also reported on the performance.

Marizele described the exchange as spontaneous, not a planned viral moment. “That moment was very spontaneous, because with Sister Marisa, if you start a beat, she will dance. And I’m used to singing, to beatboxing, so for us it was very simple, spontaneous and at the same time very surprising to see that it went viral even outside Brazil,” she told the Associated Press.
How music and dance fit their ministry
The sisters have described music and the arts as familiar ways to connect with people they serve, rather than as a departure from their religious work. AP quoted Marizele saying, “Beatboxing, dancing, and the songs itself, are tools that God uses to reach the hearts of the people we work with. And it works! It’s beautiful to see,” she said.

OSV News reported that their outreach uses beatboxing, dance, music and theatre. Marisa also said children and teens were encouraged to join dance classes after watching her learn. These are the sisters’ accounts of their ministry; the reports do not independently measure the effect of artistic activities on addiction recovery.
Marizele has also spoken about the expectations the performance challenged. “People usually think nuns are rigid, even grumpy women. When they see us singing and dancing, when they get to know us better, they realize we’re not,” she told OSV News. Marisa added, “Our Church is diverse. That is her beauty.”
