Twitch recorded approximately 1.736 billion hours watched in August 2023, about 2% below July’s total, according to StreamElements’ State of the Stream reporting using Rainmaker.gg data. The report described it as the first July-to-August decline in the cited series since 2017. That does not mean Twitch’s audience entered a confirmed long-term collapse: much of the change followed unusually strong July results, esports scheduling, major-event timing and reduced airtime from several leading creators.
What actually declined
The figures concern hours watched: the total time audiences spent watching Twitch during the month. They are not unique viewers, average concurrent viewers for each channel, active channels, subscriptions, advertising impressions or revenue.
| Metric | August 2023 | Change from July 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| Total Twitch hours watched | Approximately 1.736 billion | About -2% |
| Average daily hours watched | Approximately 56 million hours per day | About -2% |
Both July and August had 31 days, so the month-length difference does not explain the comparison. The figures and historical comparison were reported by StreamElements and attributed to Rainmaker.gg in GamesBeat’s coverage of the August 2023 State of the Stream report.
What “the first time in six years” means
StreamElements’ comparison said August had exceeded July in each year from 2017 through 2022, then fell below July in 2023. The claim is therefore specifically about the July-to-August seasonal comparison. It is not Twitch’s first monthly decline, first annual decline or first decline of any kind in six years, and it should not be treated as an independently audited industry measurement.

The categories behind the decline
| Category | August result | Reported change | Why the comparison moved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Just Chatting | Approximately 262 million hours | -9% month over month | August returned closer to historical performance after unusually high July activity, including strong activity from prominent Japanese streamers. |
| Grand Theft Auto V | Approximately 103 million hours | -26% | The category also fell back from an unusually strong July baseline. |
| Dota 2 | Not stated in the cited coverage | -36% | July benefited from the Riyadh Masters 2023; August had shorter International-related qualifiers without an equivalent concentrated event. |
| League of Legends | Not stated in the cited coverage | -14% | Riot’s competition calendar changed: the LEC summer split ended in July, while the LEC Finals extended into August and September. The LEC was outperforming the LCS during the period. |
Why esports calendars matter
Competitive-game hours are particularly sensitive to the amount of live competition available. Tournament duration, regional schedules, time zones, weekend placement, qualification stages and co-streaming rights can all change a category’s monthly total without a comparable change in underlying interest.
Dota 2 illustrates the effect. The Riyadh Masters, part of the Gamers8 festival, supplied July with a major tournament and a reported $15 million prize pool. August’s qualifiers were shorter and did not provide the same volume of concentrated matches. League of Legends faced a different calendar effect as regional competitions moved between months. A month with fewer or shorter matches naturally supplies fewer opportunities for viewers to accumulate hours.

The games that grew in August
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of August’s major positive stories. Its launch week reportedly tied The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the third-largest game launch week of 2023 on Twitch. That is a launch-week comparison, not a claim about its total August hours, an all-time ranking or the game’s lasting audience.
Escape from Tarkov
Escape from Tarkov rose approximately 233% month over month to about 40 million hours watched. The increase coincided with a pre-wipe event, the August 10 wipe and the early period after the update. A wipe resets player progress; before it, players often use accumulated equipment, creating a concentrated burst of play and viewing.

Starfield was a forecast, not an August result
StreamElements’ Or Perry expected September’s Starfield launch to perform more like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Zelda than Diablo IV or Hogwarts Legacy. That was an attributed forecast and cannot be used as evidence of August performance.
What happened to major streamers
xQc
xQc’s August hours watched reportedly fell nearly 45% to approximately 2.8 million, while his Twitch airtime fell about 40% month over month. The report connected the reduction with his splitting time between Twitch and Kick. Because total hours depend on both audience size and time live, this is not a pure measure of audience demand.

Kai Cenat
Kai Cenat’s Twitch airtime fell by approximately two-thirds. The report said he took a break after a failed New York giveaway was followed by incitement-related charges on August 5, 2023; it reported a brief August 9 stream and no Twitch streams from August 3 through August 26. Those legal circumstances should be understood as attributed reporting, not a final finding of guilt.
ibai
ibai reportedly paused streaming around August 14–22. August was also compared with the unusually large audience for his July La Velada del Año III event, making the prior month an especially high baseline.

What the report does—and does not—prove
It shows a notable month-over-month reversal
The approximately 2% platform-wide decline is real within the StreamElements/Rainmaker.gg measurement cited for August 2023, and it broke the report’s July-to-August pattern dating back to 2017.
It does not establish unique-viewer loss
Hours watched can fall because creators stream fewer hours, events occupy fewer days or categories return from an exceptional prior-month peak. A channel can retain a strong average audience while producing fewer total hours if it goes live less often. Conversely, longer streams can increase hours without higher concurrency.
It does not prove a permanent Twitch decline
The month combined reduced airtime from high-profile creators, event-driven July spikes, changing esports calendars and one-off August winners such as Escape from Tarkov. These factors identify plausible contributors, not one definitive platform-wide cause. Longer-term conclusions require several months of data and additional measures such as unique viewers, concurrency, creator activity, revenue and cross-platform behavior.
How to read the August result
- Separate demand from content supply. A lower total may reflect fewer hours streamed or fewer major matches, not simply fewer people willing to watch.
- Check the prior-month baseline. Just Chatting, GTA V and ibai’s figures were being compared with unusually strong July results.
- Account for event timing. Riyadh Masters, regional league schedules, game launches and wipes can move large volumes of viewing between adjacent months.
- Treat creator rankings as volatile. Breaks, vacations, platform splits, legal events and special broadcasts can materially change one month’s leaderboard.
- Do not substitute the report for first-party analytics. The accessible coverage attributes the numbers to StreamElements and Rainmaker.gg; it does not provide an independently audited underlying dataset.
Bottom line
August 2023 was an unusual seasonal reversal for Twitch, not conclusive evidence of a platform-wide collapse. The strongest explanation is a combination of July’s unusually high baselines, fewer or differently timed esports events, game-specific spikes and less Twitch airtime from major creators. The “first since 2017” wording is meaningful only when kept in that precise July-to-August context.
