The two official trailers for Twisters (2024) preview a disaster film about a former storm chaser who returns to tornado country and crosses paths with a rival chaser who is also a social-media personality. Universal Studios dated its first trailer February 12, 2024, and its second, Trailer 2, May 8, 2024. Amblin presents the film as a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster Twister. Because both trailers date from 2024, this is a look back at how the film was marketed, not news about an upcoming release.
What the first trailer sets up
Universal’s official trailer page, dated February 12, 2024, frames the film as a disaster-film thrill ride and builds its story around two characters:

- Kate Cooper is a former storm chaser who was haunted by a tornado encounter during college. She now studies storm patterns from New York, and the trailer’s setup has her return to the plains.
- Tyler Owens is described as a storm-chasing social-media personality. The studio says Kate crosses paths with him after she returns.
The trailer page is the studio’s own description of the film. It tells you the premise and the tone Universal wanted to sell, but it is not a plot summary of the finished movie, and it does not establish how the characters’ story resolves.
Who plays whom
Amblin’s “About the Movie” page lists the three leads. The table below pairs each actor with the role the trailer or studio materials describe.

How the film relates to the 1996 Twister
Amblin calls Twisters a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster. The Associated Press, in an article dated April 26, 2024, describes the film as a standalone story built around a new group of storm chasers, while noting that it includes references to the earlier film. The two descriptions fit together: the new film continues the subject and the franchise lineage, but the AP’s reporting frames the story as one that does not depend on the earlier characters.
The sources reviewed for this article do not state which, if any, characters from the 1996 film appear in the 2024 version. Treat the legacy references as the AP described them, not as a guarantee of a particular callback.

What Trailer 2 adds
Universal’s second trailer, dated May 8, 2024, is the release identified as Trailer 2 on the studio’s channel. The official materials cited here do not describe its individual scenes, so this article does not attribute specific shots or plot points to it. If you want to compare the two trailers, watch both and note what changes between the February and May cuts.
The marketing tone
The studio’s trailer-page copy sets the tone for both spots:
“This summer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with an adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces.” (Universal Studios, trailer page dated February 12, 2024)

- Twisters
That language is promotional. It emphasizes spectacle, the big screen, and a rural, country-tinged energy that suits a film set on the plains. It should be read as a description of how the film wants to be sold, not as independent reporting on what the footage shows.
The headline’s phrases, “fiery storms” and “epic yee-haws,” are colorful characterizations. The official materials cited here do not confirm fire imagery or any specific scene, so this article does not treat either phrase as a description of footage.

In the AP’s April 26, 2024 article, director Lee Isaac Chung says that shooting in Oklahoma, rather than on soundstages, was non-negotiable for the production. The story’s location is therefore a deliberate production choice that the director tied to the film’s setting. The AP article is the source for this; the trailers themselves do not state where any scene was shot.
Rank #4
- A former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.
What the film does and does not claim about science
NBCUniversal Media says real-life tornado experts were involved during production to support scientific accuracy. That is a statement about consultation during production. It does not mean the film is a documentary, and it does not mean that every plot device is realistic.
- Consultation with tornado experts is a production claim. It is not an independent scientific assessment of the finished film.
- Kate’s background as a researcher who studies storm patterns is part of the character’s setup. It is not evidence of how the film’s storms behave.
- Any storm-control or storm-steering ideas in the story are fiction. Neither the Universal materials nor the AP report present them as established meteorology.
- No meteorologist or other scientist is quoted in the official sources reviewed here to judge the film’s accuracy.
For readers who want to know how tornadoes work, a documentary or a meteorological agency is a better starting point than a trailer.
