Twisters delivers the storm-chasing spectacle and Glen Powell’s easy charisma its title promises, making it an entertaining summer ride. Its characters and romantic thread are thinner than its tornado sequences, so the fun is strongest when the weather takes over.
Does Twisters deliver hot, dumb fun?
Mostly, yes. The film’s central attraction is the scale and momentum of its tornado set pieces: the storms turn the story into a succession of escalating encounters, and the action supplies the energy that the quieter character scenes do not always match. The Atlantic calls that action the film’s “juice” and recommends seeing it in IMAX or 4DX where those formats are accessible. The Atlantic’s review finds the spectacle more successful than the romantic and character material.

Powell helps bridge that gap. His Tyler is a storm-chasing YouTuber, and the actor brings a confident, playful screen presence that gives the film some of its lift. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critic consensus likewise emphasizes spectacle, thrills, and Powell’s charisma; that is an aggregate critical description, not a measure of every viewer’s response. What is the story, and who is chasing the storms?
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters follows people with opposing motivations who join forces to study tornadoes and try to predict—and possibly tame—their force. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate, a meteorologist and researcher whose earlier experience with a tornado shapes her return to storm work. The emotional idea behind the spectacle is clear in Chung’s account of his intentions. As quoted by the Associated Press, he said: “It’s like I could see it,” and added, “I was firing off in my mind all the emotions that I want the audience to feel.” The Associated Press report
How does it connect to the original Twister?
Twisters is a standalone follow-up, not a direct sequel built around returning characters from the 1996 film. The original characters do not return, but the earlier movie’s legacy appears through references including its fictional Dorothy tornado sensors and Muskogee State University, according to the Associated Press. That makes the connection more about shared history and recognition than continuing the old cast’s story.

Where does the film fall short?
The storm action is more developed than the people caught up in it. The Atlantic’s review praises Powell’s charisma while finding the romance comparatively thin and Kate’s characterization less fully realized. As a result, the film’s momentum can outrun its emotional relationships: the leads have less depth together than the tornado sequences have force. Viewers looking primarily for a disaster spectacle are better served than those expecting a substantial romance or finely layered character drama.
