Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters (2024) is at its best when the tornadoes are the main event. Its large-scale storm sequences and Glen Powell’s screen presence carry most of the appeal. The emotional story is sincere and gives the disaster action personal stakes, but its character writing does not always develop as fully as the spectacle around it. This review covers how the film relates to the 1996 original, what works, where the emotional material falls short, and where to watch or buy it.
Is Twisters a sequel to Twister?
It is a legacy sequel, not a direct continuation. The film revisits the concept and reputation of the 1996 original, a story built around chasing tornadoes to understand them and, in this film’s ambitions, to predict and potentially tame them. It does not bring back that film’s principal characters. Amblin Entertainment’s official description presents a fresh ensemble whose members have opposing motivations, and RogerEbert.com’s July 10, 2024 review frames the film the same way.

If you are hoping for familiar faces, adjust your expectations. If the draw is the premise itself, storm chasers, forecasting, and the risk of getting too close to the weather, the connection to the earlier film is clear.
What the film is about
Twisters follows a new group of storm chasers who are trying to predict tornadoes and, in the film’s framing, potentially tame them. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate Carter, whose past trauma shapes her return to storm work. Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos are part of the wider ensemble, and the group’s opposing motivations give its dynamics their friction. The plot is kept spoiler-free here; the review assumes no knowledge of how it resolves.

Where the film delivers
The storm sequences
The strongest argument for the film is its large-scale tornado work. Chung treats the storms as the central set piece rather than a backdrop for the characters, and the sequences are most visceral when the scale is fully visible. RogerEbert.com points to the theatrical spectacle as the reason the film works on a big screen, and that reading holds: the film is built to be watched in a cinema.
Glen Powell’s screen presence
Powell provides the film’s most reliable source of energy. RogerEbert.com highlights his presence as one of the film’s draws, and his charisma keeps the picture moving between set pieces. The performance is accessible blockbuster work rather than a showcase of range, which suits a film that prioritises momentum.

Where the emotional story falls short
The emotional intentions are real. Kate Carter’s trauma-and-return arc gives the disaster action a human cost, so the danger has stakes beyond the next set piece. The New Yorker’s July 29, 2024 review pushes back on how that material is developed, describing the character arcs and plot development as thin. The reservation is not that the emotional beats are missing. It is that they do not always receive the same care as the storms.
Readers who want a character-driven drama with a disaster backdrop should expect a more uneven experience than the title’s “emotional” label suggests.

How “twisty” holds up
The film has plot turns that keep the middle section moving, and critics who praise its momentum are responding to that structure. Whether a given turn feels surprising depends on how much you already expect from disaster films. The title’s description is an editorial reading of the film’s dramatic approach, not a measured consensus.
Is Twisters worth watching?
Yes, for a specific kind of viewer. It rewards audiences who want:
Rank #4
- A former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.
- Tornado set pieces that benefit from a large screen and a loud soundtrack
- A charismatic lead whose presence carries the film’s pace
- A disaster film with a personal thread, even if that thread is thinner than the spectacle
It is a weaker choice if you need:
- Fully developed character writing across the ensemble
- A strong emotional payoff that matches the film’s ambitions
- A continuation that brings back the 1996 cast
