Shows about immigrant parents and their children
Fresh Off the Boat: a family sitcom about adjustment
Loosely based on Eddie Huang’s 2013 memoir, this sitcom follows Taiwanese immigrant parents raising their children while starting a restaurant in Florida. It is a direct choice for viewers looking for an immigrant family at the center of a U.S.-set comedy. The Immigrant Learning Center identifies assimilation and representation as prominent themes, with the family’s story seen from both the parents’ and their more Americanized children’s perspectives. The sitcom is an adaptation, not the memoir itself. The Immigrant Learning Center
Gordita Chronicles: a newcomer child’s point of view
In this family comedy, 12-year-old Cucu and her Dominican immigrant family adjust to life in the United States. Its fish-out-of-water humor sits alongside the difficulties the family faces as non-white newcomers, giving the story room for both comedy and the pressures of resettlement. Jane the Virgin: a three-generation family story
This Florida-set story follows a Venezuelan-American family across three generations. The relationship between an immigrant matriarch and her more Americanized child and grandchild is a key thread; the matriarch also gradually pursues citizenship. Choose it for a multigenerational family narrative rather than a story limited to the newcomer experience. The Immigrant Learning Center
One Day at a Time: family life beyond immigration
This comedy centers a Cuban-American family across three generations, including an immigrant matriarch. Its scope extends beyond immigration to subjects such as mental illness, addiction, and sexuality, making the family itself the framework for several kinds of personal and social challenges. Shows centered on children of immigrants or family separation
Never Have I Ever: the U.S.-born daughter takes the lead
This coming-of-age comedy puts the daughter of Indian immigrants at the center. It is a useful pick when you want the perspective of a U.S.-born child rather than a newcomer parent’s story. The Immigrant Learning Center
Party of Five: a drama about parents being deported
In this family drama, siblings have to face life after their parents are deported. Immigration is not just background context here: the separation of parents and children drives the premise. The cited watchlist describes the series as lasting one season. The Immigrant Learning Center

Immigrant stories that use an anthology format
Little America: different protagonists, different experiences
This anthology draws on true stories and moves among distinct immigrant protagonists rather than following one sitcom family. Examples in the cited watchlist include a child of deported business owners, a Syrian refugee, and a Chinese mother. Its varied stories make it a better fit for viewers who want a set of individual immigrant narratives than a single family ensemble. The Immigrant Learning Center
One related series is set in Canada, not the United States
Kim’s Convenience: a Toronto family sitcom
Kim’s Convenience follows Korean immigrant parents and their Canadian-born children, but the family lives in Toronto. It is relevant to a watchlist about immigrant families because it explores relationships across generations, yet it should not be described as a U.S.-set show. The series grew from Ins Choi’s play. What recent television representation data says
A 2026 study by Define American and USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center Media Impact Project examined 201 immigrant and children-of-immigrant characters across 80 episodes from 62 scripted series that aired from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2025. The sample included 172 immigrants and 29 U.S.-born children of immigrants. The researchers included the latter because, as the report puts it, “To tell the immigrant story accurately is to tell the whole family’s story.” These findings describe the study’s sample, not every TV show. Define American’s research 2026 report
- In the study’s sample, 23% of immigrant characters on television were Latine, compared with 45% of all U.S. immigrants, according to the report.
- In that same sample, 57% of immigrant and children-of-immigrant characters came from streaming networks.
- In an audience study about Mo, 62% of surveyed viewers said the show increased their understanding of challenges immigrants and asylees face in the U.S. That finding applies to surveyed Mo viewers, not all viewers or programs.
For historical context, Define American’s 2018 data reported that immigrants made up 11% of characters in selected shows, compared with 14% of people in America who were foreign-born; it also reported that 34% of immigrant characters in its sample were associated with a crime. Those are 2018 findings, not current figures. Define American’s research
