Tung Tung Tung Sahur is an AI-generated Indonesian meme character: a wooden, drum-like figure often shown holding a bat or stick. Its name evokes the sound of a drum being played to wake people for sahur, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan. It is commonly grouped with Italian brainrot memes, but the phrase and cultural reference are Indonesian—not Italian.
What does “Tung Tung Tung Sahur” mean?
“Tung tung tung” imitates a drumbeat, while sahur is the meal eaten before dawn during Ramadan. Together, the words suggest a call to wake up for sahur. The phrase draws on an Indonesian practice of using drums to rouse people before the meal; it is not Italian wording or a reference to Italian tradition. Know Your Meme’s character entry describes the figure’s wooden form as based on an Indonesian kentongan drum.
Where did the character come from?
Know Your Meme identifies February 28, 2025, as the date of the earliest known image, posted by TikTok account @noxaasht. The archive reports that the first video reached 31 million views and 2.4 million likes within a month. Those are figures reported by Know Your Meme in 2025, not independently verified current platform totals.

What is the scary story in the video?
The original video’s Indonesian text-to-speech narration presents Tung Tung Tung Sahur as a “scary anomaly that only comes out at Sahur.” In the meme’s fictional premise, the figure comes to a home if someone is called for sahur three times and does not answer. Know Your Meme’s March 2025 explainer reproduces and translates the narration.
That three-call setup is a horror device in the viral video. The available accounts establish it as meme narration, not as a documented traditional belief or a factual warning.

Why is it called Italian brainrot?
Italian brainrot is a broader early-2025 meme trend associated with AI-made creatures and exaggerated narration. Tung Tung Tung Sahur is often grouped with it because it circulated in that meme environment and shares the surreal AI-character style. That label describes the wider trend; it does not make this character Italian. Its name and the sahur drum reference point to Indonesian culture. The Associated Press discusses the wider meme trend, rather than serving as a detailed source for this character’s origin: AP’s overview of Italian brainrot memes.

- Cultural reference: the drumbeat and the pre-dawn Ramadan meal, sahur, provide the phrase’s Indonesian context.
- Fictional device: the wooden monster and the three unanswered calls are elements of the video’s horror story.
- Trend label: “Italian brainrot” places the character in a broader meme family, not in Italian language or folklore.
Know Your Meme documents a fan tutorial for drawing the character with a mechanical pencil, but that is fan art, not evidence of official merchandise. No source cited here confirms authorized toys, collectibles, licensing, or a named rights holder. A separate USPTO office action concerning an application for “SKIFIDOL ITALIAN BRAINROT” does not establish rights to Tung Tung Tung Sahur: USPTO procedural document.
