Yes. Start the audio, then say, “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.” Alexa is intended to stop the active playback when the countdown expires. It’s a one-session control, not a guarantee that every music service, Bluetooth connection, or group of Echo speakers will behave identically.
Set a sleep timer with your voice
- Start audio: Say, “Alexa, play relaxing music,” or name an artist, album, playlist, station, podcast, or supported sound skill.
- Set the countdown: Once playback begins, say, “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.” This is the clearest phrase to try first.
- Check the timer: Ask, “Alexa, how much time is left on my timer?” The spoken response can vary; the Alexa app may also show active timers, depending on your device and app version.
- Cancel it: Say, “Alexa, cancel the sleep timer” or “Alexa, cancel my timer.” If more than one timer is active, check the remaining time or use the app to identify the one you mean.
Other commonly used forms include “Alexa, stop in one hour” and “Alexa, set a sleep timer for two hours.” Amazon Skill Store listings document sleep-timer commands for supported sound skills, but Amazon’s public consumer help material does not establish that every wording works in every language, region, device, or playback service. See the listings for Sleep Sounds and Ambient Noise by Sleep Jar.
Choose a practical duration
You can try everyday countdowns such as 10, 30, or 45 minutes, one hour, 90 minutes, or two hours. A request such as “until 11 PM” is a clock-time request rather than a duration; its availability and behavior may differ, so don’t assume it is equivalent to a sleep timer.
There is an important limit distinction: Amazon documents a two-hour maximum for timers created through the Alexa Skills Kit Timers API. That is a developer API limit, not proof of a universal maximum for consumer voice timers. Amazon’s timer API reference describes the API, not every consumer timer scenario.

What happens when the timer expires?
The timer runs separately from the music request: Alexa starts the selected content, then the countdown is meant to stop the active playback when time runs out. It does not calculate a queue of songs to fill the requested period, and it may interrupt a track. Treat the duration as a maximum listening window, not a promise that audio will continue uninterrupted until the deadline.
If an album, playlist, station, or skill ends first, playback can stop while the countdown remains active. For a more natural ending, pick an album or playlist close to the desired listening length, or use a service-specific collection intended for sleep. An ordinary timer may produce an audible alert, so test the exact setup if a silent shutdown matters; expiration behavior can depend on whether the countdown is Alexa’s timer or is managed by a skill.

Which audio sources are likely to work?
Alexa supports music playback controls such as play, pause, resume, and stop. Amazon documents these interactions in its Alexa music documentation and music intent reference. That establishes Alexa’s music controls, but not a provider-by-provider guarantee for every sleep timer.
- Music services: The timer is most straightforward when you start playback through an Alexa-supported music source. The exact integration and response can vary by service, account, device, and region.
- Podcasts, radio, and streaming stations: These may stop as expected, but provider integrations differ. Don’t count on the exact position being saved or playback reliably resuming later.
- Ambient sounds and Alexa skills: Some sound skills advertise custom sleep timers. For example, Thunderstorm Sounds by Sleep Jar describes custom time and looping features. A skill listing is evidence for that skill’s stated behavior, not a compatibility guarantee for all skills; free content, ads, loops, and paid features can vary.
- Bluetooth: The Echo may be acting as a speaker while a phone or other source controls the audio. The timer may stop the Echo’s output, but the source app or connection can affect what happens. Test it before relying on it overnight.
- Multi-room music: When playback is synchronized across Echo devices, verify whether the timer stops every speaker or only the device that heard the command. The result may depend on how playback was started and which device is active.
Amazon does not provide one public compatibility matrix covering every provider, Echo model, Bluetooth setup, multi-room group, and Alexa language. English-language command examples and U.S.-oriented guidance may not map exactly to other locales.

One-time timer or nightly schedule?
For tonight’s listening session
Use the voice countdown after playback starts. It is the simplest way to limit a single session.
To start audio at a set time
An Alexa Routine is designed to automate actions and can be triggered by voice, time of day, or smart-home events, as Amazon explains in its Routines overview. Routine setup and available actions can change by app version, account, device, and music provider, so use the current app interface rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

To start and stop audio on a repeating schedule
A Routine may let you schedule a start and a separate stop-related action, but the available actions and timing controls vary. Do not assume a routine can reliably stop every third-party stream. Set up the exact device-and-service combination and test it before depending on it overnight.
Amazon discontinued the developer-facing Alexa Routines Kit on May 13, 2026. That change concerns developer tools; it does not, by itself, mean the consumer Alexa Routines feature has ended. Amazon’s Routines Kit notice and guidance for pre-built routines address the developer-facing functionality.

If the music does not stop as expected
Alexa confirms a timer, but audio continues
- Test with a short countdown: “Alexa, set a sleep timer for five minutes.”
- Ask, “Alexa, how much time is left on my timer?” to confirm a countdown is active.
- Say “Alexa, stop” if you need to end the audio immediately.
- If the audio is over Bluetooth or in a multi-room group, disconnect Bluetooth or test on a single Echo to isolate the setup.
- If a third-party skill controls the sound, check that skill’s instructions or try the music service’s own sleep timer, if it offers one.
- Use a Routine or another automation only after confirming that its stop action works with the exact source and device.
A timer confirmation alone does not prove the active stream will respond correctly. The five-minute test is a useful check before using a new setup for sleep.
The wrong audio or device stops
Alexa’s interpretation can depend on which playback session is active. When several devices or audio sessions are involved, simplify the setup and test one Echo at a time; where possible, name the target device when issuing the request.
Playback ends before the countdown
The content may have reached the end of its queue, the service may have had a connection or account problem, a skill may have a playback limit, or another person or automation may have paused or stopped it. A sleep timer cannot keep a stream alive if its source ends or disconnects.
When another timer is a better fit
- You want a particular listening window: Use an album or playlist of roughly that length along with Alexa’s countdown; the timer can still stop partway through a song.
- You want rain, ocean, or white noise: A dedicated sound skill may suit the content better than a music service, but check its looping, advertising, and subscription rules.
- Your phone is the playback source: Try the source app’s own sleep timer, if available. It may be a better match when the app—not Alexa—controls the session.
- You need a precise recurring shutdown: Test Alexa’s routine or automation with the exact stream first. If it does not reliably stop that source, use a timer in the source device or service where available.
A new Echo is unnecessary if you already have an Alexa-enabled device and only need a sleep timer. A music subscription is also not required just to issue the timer command; choose a service for its catalog and your existing playlists, not on the assumption that a paid tier guarantees more reliable timer behavior.
