Written and directed by Daina O. Pusić, the 2024 A24 feature pairs Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lola Petticrew in a domestic drama that turns uncanny when Death arrives as a talking bird.
What is Tuesday about?
Zora (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her teenage daughter, Tuesday (Lola Petticrew), face Tuesday’s terminal illness and the prospect of her death. The crisis takes an extraordinary form when Death appears as a talking bird, voiced by Arinzé Kene. A24 describes the story as a fairy tale about loss and resilience; the film’s mix of family conflict, fantasy and disturbing imagery makes that framing only part of the picture.
The emotional tension comes from the difference between Tuesday’s willingness to engage with mortality and Zora’s struggle to accept it. The bird is no cute mascot or simple fantasy companion: its unsettling presence gives the family’s crisis an uncanny, sometimes grotesque shape.
How does the film balance drama, fantasy and horror?
Tuesday moves between intimate domestic scenes and surreal set pieces, with body-horror imagery that makes its ideas about death physical rather than abstract. The shifts are central to the film’s appeal and its risk: viewers who welcome an unpredictable fairy tale may find the form emotionally potent, while those looking for a tightly controlled drama may find the tonal changes overextended.

In her 2024 Associated Press review, Lindsey Bahr called it “some strange combination of body horror, fairy tale, domestic drama and apocalypse thriller.” Bahr also praised its originality, effects work and sound design. Wendy Ide, writing for the Guardian, described an ambitious, striking debut and praised its early elegance, while arguing that its control loosens later. Together, those responses point to the key question for viewers: do the film’s strange images deepen the mother-daughter story, or do they pull attention away from it?
What do Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lola Petticrew bring to the story?
Louis-Dreyfus plays Zora against the comic persona many viewers may know her for, making the character’s avoidance and grief the dramatic center of the film. Bahr called her performance chilling and deeply empathetic; Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus likewise highlights her commitment while acknowledging the film’s stylistic risks. Those are critical judgments, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the performance or the surrounding tonal shifts convincing.

Petticrew’s Tuesday is not simply a figure for others to grieve. Her willingness to face what is happening gives the conflict its counterweight: the film asks what happens when a parent’s instinct to resist loss collides with a young person’s attempt to meet it directly.
Is Tuesday worth watching?
It is best approached as an unusual, emotionally serious fantasy rather than a standard horror movie. Its talking-bird conceit, body horror, effects and sound design give the story a distinctive visual and sonic world; its willingness to move between registers will be a dividing line. If you are drawn to ambitious films that make grief strange and tangible, its risks may be part of the experience. If you prefer steadier tonal control, the later sections may feel less assured.
