Tubelight has a humane idea at its center: an ordinary man’s faith in his missing brother becomes a plea for family, peace and hope. But Salman Khan’s portrayal of Laxman, an adult characterized as childlike, is so difficult to believe that the film’s earnest message struggles to land. The problem is not the character’s simplicity; it is the gap between the performance and the emotional credibility the story needs.
What is Tubelight about?
Released on June 23, 2017, Tubelight is directed by Kabir Khan and stars Salman Khan as Laxman and Sohail Khan as his younger brother, Bharat. The story is set in 1962: after Bharat is drafted into the army, Laxman tries to bring him home. Yash Raj Films describes the film as a story about self-belief and family love.
Laxman is written as a childlike adult, and the film asks the audience to take his sincerity and determination seriously. That characterization is a dramatic choice, not a medical diagnosis. The title’s phrase “a child with a man’s body” captures the performance problem some viewers may notice, but it should not be mistaken for a clinical description.
Why does Salman Khan’s performance divide the film from its message?
The role requires a balance: Laxman must seem naïve without becoming a caricature, and his emotional openness needs to feel like a source of strength rather than a repeated mannerism. Salman Khan’s broad, conspicuously youthful portrayal makes that balance hard to find. Instead of drawing the viewer into Laxman’s point of view, it often calls attention to the star performing the role.

The Guardian’s June 24, 2017 review called the film a “1960s-set mushfest” and described Khan playing teenage Laxman as “unignorable ridiculous.” India Today’s June 23 review also found the execution dull, though it framed Laxman as an adult marked by naivety, simplicity and innocence. The Indian Express offered the clearest distinction between intention and result: “love conquers all,” but “it is the messenger who fails.” Together, these responses point to a central weakness: the film’s compassionate premise depends on a lead performance that many contemporary critics did not find persuasive.
What works—and what does not—in the story?
The brothers give the story its emotional anchor
The relationship between Laxman and Bharat gives the film a straightforward, accessible stake. Bharat’s enlistment turns separation into the problem Laxman must face, and the brothers’ bond gives the story a reason to move beyond spectacle. Sohail Khan’s presence as Bharat helps keep that family connection in view.

The antiwar and faith themes are sincere but heavily signposted
Tubelight wants faith and love to answer fear and conflict. That intention fits its 1962 setting and gives the film a message broader than one family’s separation. Yet sincerity alone cannot make a theme persuasive: when the plot leans on its moral lesson more than on believable character behavior, the emotional effect can feel forced. The Guardian criticized the story’s glibness and forced quality; India Today found the film dull. The film’s good-hearted aims are therefore easier to identify than to feel.
How does Tubelight adapt Little Boy?
Yash Raj Films identifies Little Boy as the original film on which Tubelight is based. Tubelight relocates the story to a 1962 Indian context and places the bond between adult brothers at its center. That shift gives the film a distinct family and historical frame, but it also raises the stakes for the lead role: Laxman’s childlike quality has to carry the story’s emotional logic. The adaptation’s premise is understandable; the difficulty is making that premise convincing on screen.

Is Tubelight that bad?
It is not without a coherent idea or a clear emotional intention. Viewers drawn to sentimental family dramas may value its emphasis on brotherhood, faith and peace. But the film’s earnestness does not erase the weakness at its center. If Laxman’s performance feels exaggerated or implausible to you, the story’s appeals to hope are likely to feel less moving than intended. The contemporary reviews differ in emphasis—glibness, dullness and an ineffective lead—but converge on the film’s struggle to make its message work.
