Truth & Treason is a 2025 Angel Studios historical drama about Helmuth Günther Hübener, a Hamburg teenager who listened to forbidden BBC broadcasts and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets during World War II. It is based on a documented resistance case, but it is a dramatization—not a documentary or a complete history of German opposition to Nazism.

Truth & Treason is a 2025 American historical drama about Helmuth Günther Hübener, a Hamburg teenager who listened to forbidden BBC broadcasts and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets during World War II. Directed by Matt Whitaker and released by Angel Studios, the film turns a documented youth-resistance story into a feature-length drama. It is best approached both as an accessible introduction to Hübener and his friends and as a starting point for reading the fuller historical record—not as a documentary or a complete survey of German resistance to Nazism.

What is Truth & Treason about?

The film follows Hübener after a Jewish friend disappears and he begins to question the Nazi regime’s propaganda and official accounts of the war. He secretly listens to banned BBC broadcasts, interprets what he hears, and helps produce and circulate leaflets that challenge the Nazi Party’s claims.

That activity may sound modest beside armed uprisings or sabotage, but Nazi authorities treated unauthorized criticism, foreign broadcasts, and so-called defeatist propaganda as serious crimes against the state. A teenager who gathered information, translated or interpreted it, wrote it down, and passed it to others was taking a potentially fatal risk.

Hübener does not act alone. The story centers on his collaboration with fellow teenagers Karl-Heinz Schnibbe and Rudolf “Rudi” Wobbe. Together, they form a small clandestine resistance network whose work is informational rather than military. Their leaflets attempt to break through state-controlled news and encourage ordinary Germans to question what they are being told.

Is Truth & Treason based on a true story?

Yes. The film is based on the documented case of Helmuth Günther Hübener, a Latter-day Saint teenager from Hamburg who opposed the Nazi regime. Hübener was born in 1925 and was executed in Berlin-Plötzensee on October 27, 1942, at the age of 17.

According to the historical account published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hübener produced anti-Nazi leaflets over approximately eight months. He is commonly identified as the youngest member of the German resistance to Nazism to be executed by order of the Nazi People’s Court system. Schnibbe and Wobbe were also arrested and prosecuted; the film’s central group therefore represents a real resistance episode rather than a fictional composite.

There is an important distinction, however. Truth & Treason is a dramatization. Its dialogue, pacing, scene construction, and character interactions have been shaped for cinema. Viewers should not treat every exchange or visual detail as verbatim historical evidence. The reliable historical questions—who Hübener was, what the group did, and what happened to them—are better answered through documentary records and historical scholarship.

The real Helmuth Hübener group

Hübener’s resistance belongs to the broader, varied history of opposition to Hitler. Resistance under Nazism included underground publishing, clandestine education, documentation of crimes, escape networks, sabotage, armed revolt, and many smaller acts of refusal. The Hübener group was a particularly young network focused on obtaining and distributing information.

  • The New York Times called it Superb! and Time found it Ultimately rewarding.with a sterling cast.This acclaimed adaptation of Paul Scot's masterpiece, The Raj Quartet, won over 20 international awards, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Filmed on location, it re-creates the turbulent period when British colonial rule in India came crashing down. The memorable cast includes Dame Peggy Ashcr

Hübener’s religious identity is part of his biography, but it should not be turned into a claim about all Latter-day Saints or all German Christians under Nazi rule. His moral and religious convictions helped shape his personal response to dictatorship. His actions should also be understood within the much larger and more complicated history of German society, including the many forms of compliance, accommodation, silence, and opposition that existed under the regime.

The strongest English-language documentary account located for this story is When Truth Was Treason: German Youth Against Hitler, compiled, translated, and edited by Blair R. Holmes and Alan F. Keele from the narrative of Karl-Heinz Schnibbe. The 1995 University of Illinois Press edition runs to 425 pages and includes photographs, documents, notes, and an index. It is especially valuable because Schnibbe supplied the central firsthand narrative of the group. Readers looking beyond the film should begin with When Truth Was Treason, while remembering that memoir and retrospective testimony also require historical evaluation.

Cast, director, and production

Truth & Treason was directed by Matt Whitaker, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ethan Vincent. Angel Studios distributed the film, and Kaleidoscope Pictures is identified as the production company.

The project was originally announced as a limited series called Truth & Conviction. Angel later repositioned it as a theatrical feature while retaining an expanded four-part version for its own platform.

Feature film versus the four-part extended edition

The four-part Truth & Treason: Limited Series is not a sequel. It covers the same underlying story as the feature but adds scenes, storylines, and character development. In practical terms, viewers are choosing between a more compact theatrical presentation and a longer episodic version that spends more time with the characters and the resistance group’s circumstances.

Angel announced the extended edition as an Angel-exclusive release beginning October 17, 2025. Its availability is tied to Angel’s current membership arrangements, so viewers should confirm the requirements on Angel’s support or film pages before subscribing. The membership status, regional access, subtitles, language options, and platform catalog can change.

  • Digital purchase or rental: Angel’s film page directs viewers to listed digital platforms for purchase or rental. Check the current listing for your country rather than assuming that every platform or format is available everywhere.
  • Blu-ray and DVD: Angel’s store lists a standard Blu-ray-plus-DVD combo and a DVD-only release. The store listing describes approximately 123 minutes of running time, bonus cast-and-crew material, commentary tracks, English and other language options, and NTSC/all-region details. Stock, price, and order status should be checked before buying.

If you want the expanded version, Angel is the relevant place to check. If you need offline access, a physical copy may be more practical—particularly for family, library, or classroom use—but the Angel store has shown changing preorder, sold-out, and pricing states at different times.

Runtime, rating, and content warnings

The official Angel film page lists a runtime of 2 hours 1 minute, while Angel’s support information gives 2 hours 3 minutes. The difference may reflect rounding, a version change, or inconsistent listings. The film’s physical-media listing describes approximately 123 minutes. It is safer to describe the feature as roughly two hours rather than present one runtime as indisputable.

The film is rated PG-13. Angel’s current parent-facing guidance recommends it for viewers aged 13 and older and identifies the following material:

  • strong violent content and torture;
  • bloody imagery, including one bloody image;
  • thematic material involving Nazi persecution, imprisonment, and execution;
  • smoking; and
  • mildly crude language.

The historical subject makes the film potentially useful for older teenagers studying propaganda or resistance, but younger viewers may need preparation and discussion. Adults should decide whether the film’s treatment of violence and persecution is appropriate for a particular child or classroom.

Reception and critical positioning

Angel’s official film page displays an 85% Tomatometer score, a 96% audience score, a CinemaScore grade of A, and an 8.0/10 rating. These figures are platform-displayed aggregates and may change as additional reviews or audience responses are added. Rotten Tomatoes classifies the film as a history drama and mystery-thriller and lists Matt Whitaker as director, Whitaker and Ethan Vincent as writers, and Angel Studios as distributor.

Those reception figures should be kept separate from the film’s historical value. The movie’s strongest appeal is its moral and educational premise: young people confronting propaganda, deciding whether conscience requires action, and accepting the danger that follows dissent. Its limitations are the normal limitations of dramatized history. It condenses events, creates narrative momentum, and presents a focused inspirational arc rather than a neutral survey of every form of German opposition to Nazism.

Books to read after the film

Readers who want to separate the documented case from the film’s dramatization have several options:

  1. When Truth Was Treason: German Youth Against Hitler, compiled, translated, and edited by Blair R. Holmes and Alan F. Keele. This is the most substantial directly relevant English-language account located in the research, with Schnibbe’s narrative, documents, photographs, notes, and index.
  2. Hübener vs. Hitler: A Biography of Helmuth Hübener by Richard Lloyd Dewey. Published in 2003, it offers a focused biography, although older editions may have variable availability, condition, and used-book pricing.
  3. The Boy Who Dared. This is a youth-oriented treatment that may work as companion reading for younger readers or educators, but its edition and current availability should be checked separately from the adult historical scholarship.

Related titles such as The Price and Before the Blood Tribunal can also help readers pursue the subject, though they may be older or harder to find. For classroom or serious research use, compare any memoir-based account with documentary collections and broader scholarship on resistance under Nazism.

Why the story still matters

Truth & Treason presents resistance as an information problem as much as a battlefield problem. Hübener’s group does not need to command an army to challenge the regime; it needs access to uncensored information, the ability to assess it, the means to reproduce it, and the courage to distribute it. That makes the story especially relevant to discussions of propaganda, censorship, state violence, and the personal cost of telling the truth under dictatorship.

The film is most useful when it opens a larger conversation. After watching, viewers can ask which parts of the story are documented, how Nazi authorities criminalized speech and information, why youth resistance was so dangerous, and how Hübener’s group compares with other German and European resistance movements. Those questions turn an inspirational historical drama into a route toward more careful historical understanding.
