In May 2023, Donald Trump reposted on Truth Social a nine-second manipulated video that used an AI-generated imitation of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper’s voice. Donald Trump Jr. had shared the clip on Twitter shortly after CNN’s Trump town hall; Trump reposted it two days later. A Twitter Community Note identified the video as fake, according to Popular Science’s contemporaneous account.
What the clip showed—and what is documented
The altered soundbite made Cooper appear to give Trump a vulgar compliment about his town-hall performance. Popular Science reported the sequence on May 17, 2023. Its account describes the audio as an AI-generated vocal imitation, but it does not identify who made the clip, which model or service produced it, or whether its creator disclosed that it was synthetic.
The available reporting also does not establish the exact time of Trump’s Truth Social repost or whether that post is still accessible. Those gaps matter: the incident is well documented as a reposting event, but the clip’s production history is not.
Chronology
- CNN held a town hall with Donald Trump.
- Shortly afterward, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the manipulated, nine-second clip.
- A Twitter Community Note flagged the video as fake.
- Two days later, Trump reposted the same altered clip on Truth Social.
Why an AI voice imitation can sound convincing
The Federal Trade Commission says modern voice-cloning systems are enabled by advances in AI text-to-speech and generally learn from large collections of real speech. Some commercial and open-source systems can reproduce a person’s voice in ways that are difficult to identify by ear. The technology also has legitimate uses, including helping people who have lost their voices communicate in a familiar voice.

An FTC event page from 2020 cited research discussions that a near-perfect reproduction could be created from less than five seconds of recorded speech. That is a historical statement about capabilities discussed at the time, not a current, universal performance guarantee for every system.
The same capability creates risks including fraud, impersonation and appropriation of performers’ voices. The FTC has emphasized that the risks of voice cloning cannot be addressed by technology alone.

What remains unknown about the Trump-Cooper video
- The original creator is not identified in the reviewed reporting.
- The model, application or service used to imitate Cooper is not identified.
- The evidence reviewed does not establish whether the maker attached a synthetic-media disclosure.
- No sourced figure establishes how many people saw the clip, believed it, or interacted with it.
A later filing in the Federal Election Commission’s document system cited the video as an example of manipulated media that could sow mistrust in news organizations. That filing is policy context, not an independent forensic examination of the audio.
How to evaluate a suspected voice-cloned clip
Do not treat a detector score, a watermark or a quick listening test as a final authenticity ruling. The FTC groups possible interventions into three stages, each answering a different question and carrying different weaknesses.

| Approach | When it acts | What it tries to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevention or authentication | Before content is distributed | Restrict misuse or preserve evidence of where a communication originated | Watermarks can be altered or removed, and incorrect authentication can create false confidence |
| Real-time detection | During a call or live communication | Assess whether speech may be synthetic while it is happening | Effectiveness varies, and deployment must work quickly in real-world conditions |
| Post-use evaluation | After a recording is published | Look for acoustic or other signs consistent with cloned audio | Synthesis techniques improve, so detection methods may become outdated or fail on edited material |
A practical verification sequence
- Find the earliest available upload. Record the account, date and platform, and compare reposts for cropping, added captions or altered audio.
- Look for an independent source. Check whether a reputable news organization, the purported speaker or the original broadcaster published the same statement in an unedited recording.
- Check the context. Ask whether the sentence fits the speaker’s documented program, interview or timeline. Implausible wording is a warning, not proof by itself.
- Use technical tools as supporting evidence. A detector or watermark can contribute to an assessment, but neither should be treated as conclusive.
- Preserve uncertainty. If provenance cannot be established, describe the clip as unverified or apparently manipulated rather than claiming a tool, creator or exact method that has not been documented.
Why the episode matters beyond one repost
Political clips can travel faster than corrections, and a convincing imitation can make viewers question genuine reporting as well as fabricated material. Patrick Lin, a philosophy professor and director of California Polytechnic State University’s Ethics and Emerging Sciences Group, told Popular Science: “Manipulating reality for profit and politics not only erodes a healthy society, but it also shows that Trump has incredible disrespect for his own base, forget about others,” and, “It’s beyond ironic that he would promote so much fake news, while in the same breath accuse those who are reporting real facts of doing the same.” Those are Lin’s opinions, not forensic findings about the clip.
The broader lesson is procedural: establish provenance before reacting, distinguish a repost from authorship, and keep technical evidence separate from claims about motive or impact. The FTC says there is no single solution to voice-cloning harms, so responsibility is shared among platforms, providers, investigators and viewers.
