The available reporting does not establish whether Hanks’s award itself was revoked or presented in another format.
What was canceled—and who made the decision?
WPAOG selected Hanks for the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award on June 11 and announced that the award would be presented during West Point ceremonies on September 25, 2025. The planned event included a ceremony and parade. In a faculty email disclosed September 5–6, WPAOG president and CEO retired Army Col. Mark Bieger said the association, in coordination with the Academy, would not hold the event as originally scheduled. The Washington Post reported the cancellation and the email’s contents.
The decision should be attributed to the West Point Association of Graduates, not simply to “West Point” or the Academy. The Post noted that Trump appeared to conflate the Academy with the alumni association when he credited “our great West Point.”
Why did the association say it canceled the ceremony?
Bieger’s email said the decision would allow the Academy to focus on “its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.” That is the association’s stated explanation. The statement does not independently establish that the event would have disrupted cadet preparation, and the reported explanation does not settle whether other considerations influenced the decision.

What did Trump say about Hanks and the cancellation?
On September 8, Trump praised the cancellation in a social-media post, writing, “Important move!” and, “We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!!” The Associated Press reported his remarks and the award’s background. Read the AP report.
The Washington Post also reported that Trump called the alumni association’s cancellation “smart” and suggested other award shows review their standards. Those comments are Trump’s political judgments, not findings about Hanks or the award selection.

Why was Hanks chosen for the Thayer Award?
WPAOG says the Sylvanus Thayer Award has been presented annually since 1958 to a U.S. citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify West Point’s motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.” In its June 11 announcement, the association cited Hanks’s work supporting positive portrayals of service members, veterans and caregivers, as well as his support for the American space program and government. It also pointed to his involvement with the World War II Memorial, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial and the D-Day Museum campaign, and to productions including Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. These were WPAOG’s stated reasons for its selection.
WPAOG board chairman Robert A. McDonald said in the announcement: “Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans.” Hanks said the recognition was “both humbling and meaningful.” WPAOG’s announcement includes the full statements and selection details.
Did Tom Hanks lose the Thayer Award?
The cancellation of the public ceremony does not, by itself, show that the award was withdrawn. The Washington Post reported that Bieger’s email did not say whether Hanks’s award was revoked or would be presented in another format. WPAOG’s current awards page lists Barack Obama as the 2024 Thayer recipient but does not resolve the 2025 award’s disposition; the absence of a 2025 entry is not proof that Hanks lost the award. WPAOG’s awards reference page does not answer that question.
