Spoilers for Part 4. Navarro does not find or capture Raymond Clark in the dredge. She follows a voice and eerie whispers, then encounters Otis Heiss, who says Clark went back down to hide: “He’s hiding in the Night Country. We’re all in the Night Country now.” The scene confirms what Navarro hears and whom she finds, but it does not explain whether the voice has a supernatural source or what “Night Country” means literally.
What happens at the end of Part 4?
Navarro enters an abandoned dredge while an offscreen voice calls “Evangeline.” As she moves through the structure, she hears eerie whispering and pursues a figure she initially takes to be Raymond Clark. The figure is Otis Heiss.
When Navarro asks where Clark is, Heiss says Clark went back down to hide. He then delivers the episode’s closing line: “He’s hiding in the Night Country. We’re all in the Night Country now.” The scene ends on Heiss’s warning, not on a reunion with Clark or an explanation of the phrase. The episode transcript supports the sequence and dialogue.
What does Navarro hear, and what does she see?
The scene presents Navarro hearing her name and other eerie voices during the dredge pursuit. It leaves their source uncertain: the dialogue does not establish that a ghost is speaking, nor does it provide a definite medical explanation. The available episode account also does not establish that Navarro’s ears are bleeding or physically injured at the end, so an ear injury should not be treated as a confirmed plot fact.

Her encounter is with Heiss, while Clark remains hidden according to Heiss. That distinction matters: the ending advances the search but does not show Navarro locating Clark.
Is Navarro seeing ghosts, or is grief shaping her experience?
Part 4 keeps spiritual and psychological interpretations open rather than confirming either. TIME’s episode explainer discusses the season’s supernatural ambiguity alongside Navarro’s family history, trauma, and experiences. It also quotes Rose warning, “Don’t confuse the spirit world with mental health issues.” The warning argues against reducing spiritual experience to a diagnosis; it does not prove that Navarro’s perceptions are supernatural.

Earlier, Navarro tells Danvers that her sister Julia died by suicide and that she believes a curse affects her family: “It takes us one by one.” Danvers rejects the curse explanation and recalls an earlier case in which she says Navarro saw a ghost or spirit. Their disagreement gives the ending emotional context, but neither woman’s interpretation settles what happens in the dredge.
TIME also quotes showrunner Issa López speaking more generally about grief: “You have this feeling, even if you know rationally that this person is dead and gone, a part of you is kind of expecting to find them around the corner throughout your entire life.” That comment offers thematic context for a story haunted by loss; it is not a canonical explanation of Navarro’s voice or the final line.

What does “We’re all in the Night Country now” mean?
Heiss’s line can be read in two connected ways, neither of which Part 4 confirms as the definitive answer:
- A dangerous place: Heiss says Clark is hiding “in the Night Country,” making the phrase sound like a location or territory connected to the search.
- A shared state of fear and disorientation: By adding “We’re all” there now, Heiss turns the phrase into a warning that reaches beyond Clark’s hiding place. The characters are entering a reality where the case, grief, and uncanny experiences blur the boundaries of what they can explain.
The line’s force comes from that uncertainty. It widens the mystery rather than giving Navarro—or the viewer—a map or a settled account of the supernatural.

What the ending establishes—and what it leaves open
- Established in the scene: Navarro hears “Evangeline” and eerie voices, follows a figure through the dredge, and finds Otis Heiss.
- Heiss’s account: Clark has gone back down to hide; Part 4 does not show where he is or confirm Heiss’s claim independently.
- Left unresolved: Whether Navarro’s experience has a supernatural source, what “Night Country” means in literal terms, and whether her belief in a family curse is true.
These questions remain unresolved at the end of Part 4. The Associated Press describes Ennis as a fictional remote town in Alaska and identifies the season’s broader cases as the disappearance of eight scientists and the murder of Inuit woman and environmental activist Annie Kowtok, but those wider mysteries do not explain this final encounter. AP’s season-background report provides that context.
