A vocal and highly visible part of Tumblr’s community objected—not because creators should never earn money, but because the feature appeared to commercialize a platform built around free circulation, anonymity and fandom. Tumblr changed Post+ after the backlash, then removed it in January 2024, saying usage did not justify the cost of maintaining it.
What Post+ was supposed to do
Post+ was Tumblr’s first major attempt to put recurring creator subscriptions inside Tumblr itself. Selected creators could publish posts that only paying subscribers could read. The initial monthly prices were $3.99, $5.99 and $9.99, and Tumblr said it would retain 5% of creator earnings. Payments were processed through Stripe. TechCrunch reported those launch terms.
The product began as a closed beta with hand-picked creators. Tumblr then planned a U.S. open beta followed by availability in selected international territories, as described on its Post+ product page and in TechCrunch’s account of the open beta.
For Tumblr, the appeal was straightforward: create a new revenue stream, give creators a way to earn without sending followers elsewhere, and reduce dependence on advertising. For creators, native subscriptions promised access to an existing Tumblr audience. But those benefits depended on users accepting a much more commercial relationship with the site.

Why monetization felt different on Tumblr
The platform’s culture was deliberately low-status
Tumblr did not foreground follower counts, conventional verification or celebrity-style status. Its appeal came from reblogs, pseudonyms, chaotic discovery and communities that could form around fandoms, jokes, art and commentary without looking like a polished creator marketplace.
Many users already tolerated creators linking to Patreon or Ko-fi. The objection was sharper when Tumblr itself placed subscriptions in the interface and made paid access part of the platform’s identity. A Post+ badge looked to some users like a conventional verification marker—an import from more status-conscious social networks. TechCrunch described those concerns during the open-beta rollout.
Users feared changed incentives
Paywalls can alter what gets posted, what gets reblogged and how creators relate to followers. Tumblr users worried that a feed built on free circulation would become divided between public material and locked content, with creators pressured to reserve their most desirable work for subscribers. The concern was about a change in social norms, not a blanket rejection of creator income.
The rollout turned a product dispute into a personal attack
Tumblr announced Post+ through a separate product blog and selected a small group of beta testers before clearly explaining the feature to the wider community. That decision concentrated public anger on individual testers, including blogger and astrophysicist Kaijuno. TechCrunch reported that Kaijuno received death threats and said they felt like a “sacrificial lamb” for the rollout. Tumblr condemned threats and harassment, while the company’s business decision remained legitimate criticism.

Those are separate issues. Users could reasonably challenge Tumblr’s announcement strategy, product design and business direction. Threatening a creator for participating in a beta was unacceptable and did not become justified because the feature was controversial. The original reporting documents both the criticism and the threats.
Safety and privacy problems were practical, not abstract
Blocking paid subscribers
In the closed beta, creators could not directly block a paying subscriber. If a subscriber became abusive or dangerous, the creator had to contact Tumblr Support. A paid relationship can create a stronger sense of entitlement to access, replies or personal attention than an ordinary follow, so users questioned why a basic safety control was missing at launch.
Tumblr said direct subscriber blocking would be available before the broader U.S. launch, and it later added that control in the open beta. The change addressed one concrete failure, but it also highlighted how incompletely the first version had handled harassment and moderation.
Support, refunds and identity exposure
A subscription product needs clear answers about blocking, refunds, charge disputes, canceled blogs, abandoned archives and support response times. It also creates records of a financial relationship between a creator and a subscriber. The early beta did not give users confidence that Tumblr’s ordinary moderation and support systems had been redesigned for those stakes.

Why Tumblr’s technical reputation mattered
Users cited earlier spam and account-security problems, including hijacked blogs used to post Ray-Ban advertisements, when explaining why they hesitated to trust Tumblr with payments. Those complaints show a trust problem; they do not establish that Post+ suffered a payment-security breach. The question was whether a platform seen as unreliable with accounts could operate subscriptions, moderation and financial support dependably.
Tumblr’s stated 5% cut also needed context. It was the company’s platform fee, not a guarantee of the creator’s final net income. Payment processing, taxes, refunds and app-store rules could affect what a creator actually received.
Why fan creators were especially uneasy
Tumblr is closely associated with fan art, fan fiction, shipping communities and other transformative or remix practices. Some creators worried that putting fan work behind a paywall could increase copyright or community-rule risks, or make Tumblr appear to be commercially exploiting work based on someone else’s intellectual property. TechCrunch reported those concerns and noted restrictions on commercial-service links in relevant Archive of Our Own contexts.
That concern was not a legal ruling. Monetizing fan work is not automatically unlawful; the analysis depends on the work, jurisdiction, rights holder and nature of the use. The immediate issue was uncertainty: creators did not know how a subscription product fit with the norms and legal sensitivities of fandom.

Tumblr changed Post+ after the backlash
When Post+ moved toward an open beta, Tumblr made several significant changes:
- It added a $1.99 monthly tier alongside the original price points.
- It removed the blue Post+ badge.
- It gave creators the ability to block subscribers directly.
- It allowed creators to place existing posts behind the paywall, rather than limiting the feature to new posts.
- It expanded access beyond the initial hand-picked testers.
TechCrunch reported these open-beta adjustments. Tumblr said criticism was expected and welcomed, while continuing to condemn targeted harassment.

Tumblr announced that creators could no longer enable Post+ after December 1, 2023. Existing subscriber-only posts remained available through the end of that year, then became private in early 2024. Tumblr said subscribers would no longer be billed starting in January 2024, with a special cancellation instruction for some iOS subscribers.
Post+ was removed in January 2024. Tumblr’s stated reason was that current usage did not justify the operating cost of maintaining the service. Its archived product page records that outcome: Post+ went away in January 2024.

The fallback did not become a lasting native membership system. Tumblr later removed tipping on June 1, 2024, according to its Help Center. That does not mean Tumblr eliminated every paid product: Tumblr Supporter is a separate subscription that supports Tumblr itself, not a replacement for creator-run Post+ memberships. What the episode reveals about creator monetization
For Tumblr
Post+ offered potential revenue and a way to support creators, but it also imposed moderation, payment-support and trust costs. The company had to ask a community that valued Tumblr’s noncommercial feel to accept new status markers and paid boundaries. Its eventual decision to close the product shows that demand did not cover those costs.
For creators
Native subscriptions would have kept paid posts inside Tumblr and avoided sending followers to another service. They also tied creators to Tumblr’s policies, infrastructure and decisions about archives. A creator could face subscriber harassment, reduced public discovery or the problem of separating commercial work from free fandom participation.
If you need memberships in 2026
There is no current Tumblr-native replacement for Post+. Patreon is the clearest established external option in the available current information, but it moves the audience away from Tumblr and has different fees and billing rules. Patreon says its standard plan for creators publishing a page after August 4, 2025, carries a 10% platform fee before other applicable costs; its billing documentation also says creators using legacy billing must migrate to subscription billing by November 1, 2026. That trade-off is fundamental: an external membership service may offer a more mature subscription toolkit, while Tumblr remains useful for discovery and community but no longer supplies native recurring creator paywalls.
The larger lesson
Post+ was not rejected simply because Tumblr users opposed creators being paid. The backlash combined cultural resistance to commercialization with specific objections about rollout, safety controls, reliability, fan-work uncertainty and the loss of trust created by asking individual testers to absorb a company-wide controversy.
Monetization is never just a payment button. It changes status signals, incentives, moderation obligations and expectations between creators and audiences. On a platform whose appeal depended on appearing less commercial than its competitors, those changes required more than a subscription menu—and Tumblr ultimately concluded that Post+ was not worth sustaining.
