Rather than sending a human hero into the Grid, the film follows Ares, an advanced Program brought from the Grid into the real world. His mission becomes more complicated when he starts questioning the orders, identity and purpose that define him.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, the third feature in the TRON series stars Jared Leto as Ares and Greta Lee as Eve Kim, the programmer and reclusive ENCOM CEO searching for a crucial piece of code created by Kevin Flynn. The film arrived in U.S. theaters on October 10, 2025, and began streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026.
What is TRON: Ares about?
Ares is a highly sophisticated digital Program sent out of the Grid on a dangerous mission. His appearance in the physical world represents humanity’s first direct encounter with artificial-intelligence beings from the digital realm.
The film’s human perspective comes largely through Eve Kim, a programmer who also serves as ENCOM’s reclusive CEO. Eve is looking for a critical piece of code created by Kevin Flynn, while Ares is looking for a way to remain permanently in the real world. Those objectives bring the human and digital sides of the story into conflict—and force Ares to examine whether he is simply following a program or developing an identity of his own.

Industrial Light & Magic handled the visual effects, with the finished film containing approximately 2,000 visual-effects shots. It was captured for an IMAX presentation using 8K capture and large-format lenses. That combination of practical construction, location shooting and extensive digital work is particularly important for a franchise whose visual identity depends on making computer-generated spaces feel physical.

Several descriptions of the movie became outdated or inaccurate during its development and release. The film is not still an upcoming title: it has already opened theatrically and reached Disney+. Daft Punk did not compose its music; they scored TRON: Legacy, while TRON: Ares uses a score by Reznor and Ross.
Jeff Bridges does appear as Kevin Flynn. However, Disney’s official synopsis and production materials do not describe the film as a direct continuation centered on Sam Flynn and Quorra. The new story is built around Ares, Eve Kim and the consequences of bringing a digital being into human society.
