Actor Tristan Gorey said he forgot his seasickness tablets as he entered the water for the Rottnest Channel Swim, then battled severe seasickness through a crossing that took about nine hours. The Rottnest Channel Swim Association’s record gives his solo mainland-to-Rottnest time on 22 February 2020 as 9:06:57.
What happened during Tristan Gorey’s Rottnest swim?
In an interview with PerthNow published on 30 October 2023, Gorey recalled stepping into the water without the seasickness tablets he had meant to take. He said the swim became a severe seasickness ordeal. The crossing was 19.7 km, according to the profile.
Gorey had expected the swim to take about six and a half to seven hours. Instead, he remembered it as taking nine hours. “The Rottnest Swim is one of the most challenging experiences I have ever overcome,” he told PerthNow. He also said, “That day taught me more of what I am capable of than any other experience.”
His recollection and the official time
Gorey’s “nine hours” is a rounded recollection; the Rottnest Channel Swim Association’s official solo crossing record lists his mainland-to-Rottnest swim on 22 February 2020 at 9:06:57. That precise recorded result is consistent with his account of a roughly nine-hour crossing, but does not independently establish the cause or severity of his seasickness.
