Triple H, whose real name is Paul Levesque, announced on March 25, 2022, that he would never wrestle again after a serious 2021 cardiac event. He later described the episode as heart failure after viral pneumonia and said doctors found fluid in his lungs and around his heart. The phrase “nearly dying” reflects Levesque’s own description of how close he felt to death; it was not a formal diagnosis in WWE’s statement.
What happened to Triple H’s heart?
WWE’s September 8, 2021 statement said Levesque had undergone a successful procedure the previous week at Yale New Haven Hospital after a cardiac event. WWE attributed the episode to a genetic heart issue and said he was expected to make a full recovery. The statement did not provide a more detailed diagnosis or medical measurements. In a March 2022 interview with Stephen A. Smith, Levesque gave a fuller account. ESPN reported that he said he went into heart failure after viral pneumonia and that doctors found fluid in his lungs and around his heart. ESPN also reported that he had a defibrillator in his chest. Those details came from the later interview, not WWE’s September 2021 statement. ESPN’s interview report
Levesque told ESPN, “I was nose-diving and sort of at the 1-yard line of where you don’t want to be really, for your family and your future.” That is the basis for the dramatic “nearly dying” framing. WWE’s original statement called the episode a cardiac event; it did not call it a heart attack.

What did Triple H announce about wrestling?

WWE described him as a 14-time World Champion. WWE’s retirement announcement
The decision was about in-ring competition. It did not mean that Levesque was retiring from WWE employment or executive responsibilities.

The ceremony was not his last match. ESPN distinguishes between his last untelevised match, on June 29, 2019, in Tokyo, and his last televised match, on June 7, 2019, against Randy Orton in Saudi Arabia. ESPN’s report on his final matches
