M. T. Vasudevan Nair—widely known as MT—was a major Malayalam novelist and short-story writer whose fiction explored people, families and social change. His work also reached far beyond the page: he wrote screenplays, directed films and published across several forms. For a first encounter, consider Randamoozham for its retelling of the Mahabharata through Bhima, or choose one of the short-story collections identified by Sahapedia.
Where to start with MT’s fiction
For a myth retold from a different point of view
Randamoozham revisits the Mahabharata from Bhima’s perspective. The Ministry of Culture describes it as a Mahabharata retelling and says it is widely credited as MT’s masterpiece. That is the Ministry’s assessment, rather than a measurable consensus; the novel’s premise makes it a natural starting point for readers interested in epic retellings.
When choosing an edition, check whether it is in Malayalam or translation, and compare the translator and publisher. These details affect what text you are reading; no single edition or translation is established here as the preferred one.
For short fiction
Sahapedia identifies several collections that can serve as entry points: Ninte Ormaykku, Bandhanam, Kaliveedu, Pathanam, Varikkuzhi, Dar-es-Salam and Sherlek. Availability and English titles may vary by edition, so confirm the language and title on the copy you are considering.

The scale of MT’s writing
The Sahitya Akademi profile counts 21 short-story volumes and nine novels in MT’s published work. It also lists writing in essays, travelogues, literary criticism, children’s books, speeches, drama and screenplays. These are the Akademi profile’s counts, not an independently audited bibliography:
| Form | Count in Sahitya Akademi profile |
|---|---|
| Short-story volumes | 21 |
| Novels | 9 |
| Travelogues | 4 |
| Works of literary criticism | 3 |
| Essay collections | 7 |

The counts indicate the breadth of his published work, while the fiction remains a good place to begin. Sahitya Akademi’s awards list records Kaalam as the Malayalam award-winning novel for 1970. Its profile also records MT’s Jnanpith award in 1995.

The Government of India’s Ministry of Culture memorial notice calls MT “one of the Masters of Post-independence Indian Literature” and notes that he discovered and promoted many young writers over decades. The institution’s tribute situates his work in a wider literary life: he was not only a prolific writer but also a figure who supported younger writers. MT died on 25 December 2024, according to the Ministry.
Rank #3
For readers approaching his writing now, the practical route is simple: choose Randamoozham for a novel built around Bhima’s perspective, or begin with one of the named story collections. Check the edition’s language, translator and publisher before buying, particularly when selecting a translated work.
