The chronology matters: reports published on June 14, 2024, said authorities had confirmed Mavar’s death but that an official cause had not yet been released. The family later identified an unexpected heart attack in its obituary. The New York Times report republished by The Spokesman-Review and contemporaneous coverage reflect what was known early on. Mavar was preparing his salmon boat; the family account does not say he died during a Deadliest Catch shoot.
How long was Nick Mavar on Deadliest Catch?
Mavar worked aboard the F/V Northwestern and appeared on Deadliest Catch from 2005 through 2021. The family obituary describes his run as 17 seasons. A separate measure, episode count, was reported as 98 by Next TV/Broadcasting+Cable and The New York Times report republished by The Spokesman-Review. Seasons and episodes count different things, so the figures are not interchangeable.

What impact did Mavar make beyond the show?
His life remained rooted in commercial fishing. The family obituary says he spent summers captaining the salmon boat Miss Colleen, named for his sister. He also mentored younger fishermen, including his son and nephews—a contribution that carried his knowledge and experience into the next generation.
His family’s remembrance described a man devoted to his wife and children, known for his work ethic and generosity, and able to make people feel close to him. The obituary said he made hundreds of “best friends,” a phrase that captures how broadly his personal warmth was felt.
What did Sig Hansen say about Nick Mavar?
In a reported social-media tribute, Northwestern captain Sig Hansen wrote: “He was more than a crew member, he was a very good friend and a right hand man.” Hansen’s words point to a relationship built on trust as well as years of working together at sea. The report carrying Hansen’s tribute documents that public remembrance.
