Trevor Noah opened the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, after Dua Lipa’s performance, greeting viewers from among the audience and turning the room’s arrivals into part of the show. The most memorable beats included jokes about Taylor Swift’s effect on the local economy, NFL cameras, and the dispute between Universal Music Group and TikTok.
How Noah’s opening monologue began
The ceremony took place at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena. Noah returned as host for the fourth consecutive year and also served as a producer, according to the Recording Academy’s announcement. The 2024 broadcast was advertised for CBS and Paramount+; that was the plan for that ceremony, not confirmation of where the program can be streamed today.
After Dua Lipa’s opening performance, Noah welcomed viewers and remarked on women’s prominence in music that year, ABC News reported. Rather than deliver the opening entirely from a conventional stage position, he walked among the tables, making the audience itself part of the material.
Why Noah walked through the Grammy audience
In a February 8, 2024, discussion with producer Ben Winston, Noah and Winston later talked about Meryl Streep and Swift arriving during the monologue. Winston explained that the audience-floor setting helped keep the stage clear for the next act and let the broadcast show the celebrities in the room. As he put it, “I think you walking around that room shows off who’s in the room,” according to the transcript of the conversation.

The walk also made the opening feel responsive to what was happening around Noah. That mattered when Swift moved through the room: Noah later described her arrival as a coincidence, not a planned cue.
What Noah said when Taylor Swift arrived
Swift’s entrance became one of the opening’s defining moments. Noah joked that her movement between tables was helping nearby businesses. ABC News reported his line: “Are you seeing what’s happening right now? As Taylor Swift moves through the room, the local economy around those tables improves.”

The joke drew on Swift’s outsized presence at the time: the Los Angeles Times noted that she had six Grammy nominations and could become the first artist to win Album of the Year four times. Noah then connected Swift’s celebrity attention to the NFL broadcasts that had also followed her. “Every time someone says ‘Taylor Swift,’ I’m gonna cut the cameras to someone who played football,” he said, according to the Times. The broadcast cut to Terry Crews, a former football player, for the gag.
The TikTok joke and the music-business dispute
Noah also addressed the contemporaneous licensing dispute in which Universal Music Group was pulling its music from TikTok. He teased TikTok’s chief executive, who was in the room, and framed the dispute as a joke about artists being underpaid. The Los Angeles Times reported this excerpt: “You know what, TikTok? Shame on you,” he said. “Shame on you for ripping off all of these artists. … How dare you do that. That’s Spotify’s job.” The punchline was Noah’s, not an independent account of the companies’ business dispute.

Who else was in the room
The setting worked because the broadcast brought together performers, nominees, presenters, and other attendees. The Recording Academy’s announced presenters included Christina Aguilera, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie, Mark Ronson, Maluma, Meryl Streep, Samara Joy, Taylor Tomlinson, and Oprah Winfrey. Presenter credits are distinct from performing at the ceremony or appearing spontaneously in the audience; the Academy’s presenter announcement lists the announced group.
