The details come from a PEOPLE exclusive by Esther Kang, published March 12, 2024, in which the couple also described the pride of watching their daughter become a mother.
What the parents said about the delivery
The interview is the parents’ account, not a medical explanation. Amber Johnston described the plan for Elizabeth’s delivery in personal terms, and she was the one who explained why it was difficult. In her words:
- The procedure: “So for Elizabeth, she has to have a c-section under general anesthesia, so therefore she’s put to sleep completely, which is really, really challenging when it comes to getting a baby out fast.”
- The reason she gave: “Our pelvis is too narrow and in a sense kind of fused.”
Those statements are Amber’s explanation as reported by PEOPLE. They are not a clinical recommendation, and they should not be read as a general description of how achondroplasia affects pregnancy or delivery for other people.
The fear of not going into the operating room
The emotional center of the piece is not the surgery itself but the separation it required. Trent Johnston said the experience differed from the earlier births in the family:

- “This was the very first time Amber [hadn’t] gone back with one of our kids.”
- “Brice was there this time. You know, Elizabeth and Brice, this was their child and they needed to be together for this, but still, as parents, that’s our daughter going back and going on with surgery and it’s not us walking her back there.”
In this account, Elizabeth’s partner, Brice Bolden, accompanied her into the operating room while her parents waited outside. Trent’s comments make clear that the couple accepted that arrangement, but it was still hard for them as parents.
Becoming grandparents
The report does not end with the fear. Amber praised Elizabeth as a mother and said she had expected her to do well. Trent reflected on the experience of seeing his children start families:

- Amber: “She is a great mom, and I knew that she was going to do amazing, and she really has.”
- Trent: “But it is amazing to watch your kids become parents.”
PEOPLE describes Elizabeth as a nurse. That description and the praise come from the interview, not from an independent source.
The reported facts about the birth
PEOPLE reported that Elizabeth Johnston and Brice Bolden welcomed a daughter, Leighton Drew Bolden, in November 2023. The report gives Leighton’s birth weight as 5 pounds, 9 ounces. That is one reported birth measurement for one baby, not a statistic about achondroplasia or about C-section deliveries.
