On March 9, 2026, NFL.com reported that he agreed to return to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 14th NFL season on a one-year deal. Before the game, however, he had not made a firm decision: the Chiefs wanted him back, and the two sides planned to talk after the Super Bowl.
What decision did Kelce face after Super Bowl LX?
The question was whether to retire or continue playing for Kansas City in 2026. It was not a reported ultimatum from the Chiefs. NFL.com said the team wanted Kelce back and planned to reconvene with him after the Super Bowl, while Kelce had not yet settled on his future. His previous contract covered the 2025 season, so returning required a new agreement.
On March 9, NFL.com reported that Kelce had agreed to come back. The report described the agreement as a one-year deal worth $12 million, with a maximum value of $15 million, citing NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and sources. Those are reported terms, not figures independently established here.
Why was Kelce weighing retirement?
In comments from the New Heights podcast relayed by CBS Sports on January 7, 2026, Kelce said his love of football remained strong, but his body’s ability to recover would factor into his choice. He told his brother Jason that if he could heal, rest, and feel confident about handling another long season, he would return “in a heartbeat.” That explained what he was considering at the time; it does not establish every factor behind his eventual agreement.

Age and performance formed part of the context. NFL.com described Kelce as 36 and reported that his 2025 season included 76 receptions on 108 targets and 851 receiving yards, his lowest reception and target totals in a decade. The same report said he was voted to the Pro Bowl for an 11th consecutive year.
How the decision unfolded
- January 7, 2026: Kelce discussed his continued affection for football and the importance of physical recovery, according to CBS Sports’ account of New Heights.
- Before Super Bowl LX: NFL.com reported that Kelce had not made a firm decision, the Chiefs wanted him back, and they planned to speak after the game.
- March 9, 2026: NFL.com reported Kelce’s agreement to return to Kansas City for a 14th season, with the deal’s reported financial terms.
What the Chiefs said about the conversation
Chiefs coach Andy Reid described the importance of keeping communication open while leaving the decision to Kelce. Ahead of the NFL combine, Reid told reporters: “As long as there’s communication, I’m good. That means people want to move forward. I think that’s where Trav is. I’m not trying to put words in his mouth at all and I try to give him some space here.”

Why this was familiar after Super Bowl LIX
Kelce also took time to consider retirement after Super Bowl LIX in February 2025. The Associated Press later reported that he planned to play a 13th season and quoted a text he sent Pat McAfee saying he was coming back. That earlier return helps explain why the uncertainty after Super Bowl LX was plausible, but it was a separate decision: the 2026 agreement was for a 14th season.

The reported accounts establish a choice about retirement or another season with Kansas City, alongside contract discussions with the Chiefs. They do not establish that Kelce seriously considered signing with another team, so describing his options as a confirmed set of competing offers would go beyond what has been reported.
