TransPixar—renamed TransPixeler—is an academic video-generation research project, not an Adobe product called “TransPixar.” Researchers affiliated with HKUST and Adobe Research presented the work at CVPR 2025. Adobe separately documents transparent-background video generation in Firefly, but has not said that Firefly uses TransPixeler. Both are relevant to compositing; neither is proof of an automatic replacement for a professional VFX pipeline.
What TransPixeler is—and why it was called TransPixar
TransPixeler is research into generating video with transparency as well as color. The project was originally called TransPixar; its repository records the official rename to TransPixeler on January 19, 2025. Early coverage and demonstrations may still use the former name. The project repository and the CVPR 2025 paper identify it as a research project involving HKUST, HKUST(GZ), and Adobe Research.
That research affiliation does not make TransPixeler a branded Adobe application or establish that it is built into Firefly. Adobe’s separately documented product feature is transparent-background video generation in Firefly.
Why an alpha channel matters for VFX
Ordinary RGB video gives every frame a rectangular field of red, green, and blue pixels. An RGBA frame adds an alpha channel: information about how visible or opaque each pixel is. That lets an artist layer a generated subject or effect over a different shot instead of carrying along a baked-in background.

Transparency is useful for elements such as smoke, fire, dust, sparks, reflections, creatures, or objects intended to sit over live-action footage. But producing an attractive RGB clip and then removing its background is not the same problem as generating a well-matched alpha channel. The matte must follow boundaries and motion, preserve partial transparency, and avoid flicker, halos, or unwanted edges when composited.
How the TransPixeler method works
The CVPR paper describes adapting a pretrained RGB video generator to produce RGBA video, rather than training a complete generator from scratch. Its method uses a diffusion transformer (DiT) and adds alpha-specific tokens so the model can represent transparency alongside RGB content. The researchers use low-rank adaptation (LoRA) for fine-tuning and an alpha-channel adaptive-attention mechanism intended to improve alignment between color and transparency.
The authors report diverse, temporally consistent RGBA generation while retaining the original model’s RGB-generation capabilities. That is a research result, not independent proof that the method handles every difficult matte, meets a particular production standard, or is ready for a studio pipeline. What Adobe Firefly offers instead
Adobe documents a browser-based Firefly workflow for generating video with a transparent background. It is a separate product capability; Adobe’s help page does not identify TransPixeler as its underlying system.

- Under General settings, select Firefly Video as the model.
- Under Advanced settings, enable Transparent background. Choose an available resolution and aspect ratio, and optionally provide a first- or last-frame image.
- Enter a prompt and generate the clip. Adobe says transparent-background guidance images must be PNG files with transparency.
- Download the result and inspect the ZIP. Adobe documents two assets: a foreground video and an alpha video containing transparency information.
Adobe’s current help documentation lists 24 frames per second and five seconds as the default frame rate and duration; resolution and aspect ratio can be selected. It also says some unsupported controls may disappear when transparent-background mode is enabled. These are documented defaults, not permanent specifications. Using the separate foreground and alpha assets
A ZIP containing two assets is not necessarily a single movie file with embedded alpha that an editor will automatically interpret. In a compositor, place the foreground over the background and use the alpha asset as a track matte or channel source. Exact controls depend on the application. Check whether alpha is interpreted as straight or premultiplied, then view the result against black, white, and representative scene colors. Halos or contaminated edges may need matte refinement or edge-color correction.

TransPixeler and Firefly are different kinds of tools

The public repository includes research materials and a development branch integrating Wan2.1. A public repository is not by itself a one-click product guarantee: prospective users should check its current installation instructions, checkpoints, supported models, hardware requirements, and licensing. Do not assume TransPixeler is integrated into Firefly or that research access carries the same commercial terms as an Adobe subscription.
What transparent generation can—and cannot—do for a VFX shot
Transparency can make a generated element easier to composite. It does not supply correct lighting, contact shadows, reflections, refractions, lens distortion, depth of field, grain, or color-space matching. A technically clean matte also does not guarantee stable object identity, exact revisions, or motion that fits a plate. Depending on the shot, an artist may still need to track, key, roto, refine the matte, adjust color, match blur and grain, or use simulation and hand animation.

Inspect the troublesome cases
- Fine hair, wires, branches, and other narrow details
- Smoke, glass, translucent fabric, reflections, and shadows
- Fast particles and motion blur
- Edges against colors similar to the generated subject
- Intersections between elements and frame-to-frame alpha flicker
- Halos, matte chatter, or incorrect opacity at the edges
Neither the paper nor Adobe’s workflow documentation establishes that all of these cases are solved. Treat generated results as elements to evaluate and integrate, not as guaranteed final shots.

Choosing a workflow for the job
Use TransPixeler for research and prototyping
It is the relevant option for studying alpha-aware video generation or building a technical prototype, provided the team is comfortable evaluating research code and its requirements. It is not the straightforward choice for a producer who needs a supported subscription product, predictable revisions, or a service-level agreement.
Use Firefly for a hosted Adobe workflow
Firefly is the more accessible documented route when a creator wants to generate a short transparent element in a browser and carry the assets into an editing or compositing workflow. Adobe’s integration with familiar creative applications and its Content Credentials positioning may suit teams already using its ecosystem; those advantages do not establish that Firefly is best for every model or shot.
Adobe describes Firefly models as trained on licensed content, Adobe Stock, and public-domain material, and says customer content is not used to train its foundational Firefly models. Adobe also says Firefly Video outputs include Content Credentials indicating AI generation. These are Adobe’s statements, not a universal legal guarantee. Review current terms and any partner-model terms, and account for likeness, trademarks, client contracts, disclosure rules, and studio or union policies. Consider other video platforms for different priorities
Runway offers a dedicated generative-video platform and documents transparent exports through supported background-removal workflows. Its help page says ProRes and PNG-sequence composition exports require Pro for the applicable workflows; that does not establish that every Runway video model generates alpha natively. Check the current Runway pricing and export-plan documentation before choosing it for an alpha-specific requirement.
Google’s Flow page presents a Veo-centered creative video tool with native audio and expanded controls. That may be relevant for complete generated scenes, but the cited product page does not establish Flow as an equivalent transparent-RGBA generator. Verify the current capability if transparency is a requirement: Google Flow.
For demanding work, the practical route may be generated elements plus conventional compositing: create or source an element, refine its matte, and integrate it with tracking, lighting, color, and finishing in the team’s existing tools.
What production teams should test before adoption
- Generate representative subjects, not just the easiest demo: include hair, smoke, translucent surfaces, fast motion, and difficult background colors.
- Inspect both the image and alpha frame by frame for edge quality, temporal stability, and motion blur.
- Composite against several real plates and check edge contamination, lighting, and color integration.
- Test whether the export format and two-file workflow fit the target editor or compositor, including alpha interpretation.
- Run revisions to see whether motion and subject details can be art-directed consistently.
- Confirm plan eligibility, regional availability, credit consumption, current terms, and any required AI-content disclosures.
Firefly video and other premium generative features consume credits, with costs varying by feature and model; do not estimate usage solely by prompt count. Adobe’s credit guidance explains the system. If a promotion advertises unlimited generation, check the exact eligible models, plans, resolutions, features, dates, and return to credit limits. Adobe’s promotion terms describe those conditions; “unlimited” should not be read as applying to every Firefly video workflow.
