The franchise celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024; a separate milestone arrives in 2026, when the 1986 animated feature, The Transformers: The Movie, turns 40.
When did Transformers come out?
Hasbro dates the franchise’s worldwide debut to 1984 and says the first robot figures reached shelves in April of that year. The initial concept joined robot-to-vehicle action figures with a comic book series and The Transformers animated series. The characters’ defining feature was transformation: each could shift between a robot form and an alternate mode, often a vehicle.
That combination of figures and stories established the franchise’s basic format. It did not mean that every later series, film, or comic belonged to one continuous storyline; Transformers has been told through different productions and publishing eras.
What did Transformers celebrate at 40?
The franchise’s 40th anniversary in 2024
In 2024, Hasbro marked 40 years since the franchise began. Its announced year-long celebration included more than 40 distinct anniversary figures, a vinyl reissue featuring music from seasons one through three of the 1984 cartoon, apparel, licensed collectibles, and new publishing. Those were plans announced for the anniversary year, not confirmation that the items remain available today. Hasbro’s 2024 anniversary announcement also described limited theatrical screenings beginning May 15 in select territories, with classic-series episodes, a table read featuring original voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, and a preview of Transformers: EarthSpark. That event is historical.

The 1986 animated movie’s 40th anniversary in 2026
The 2026 milestone is different: it marks 40 years since the release of The Transformers: The Movie, the 1986 animated feature. Hasbro announced a restored 4K theatrical return alongside Optimus Prime: Awakening, a 12-minute animated short. The company described the short as featuring Cullen’s final original voice performance as Optimus Prime. The announcement does not establish where or when screenings are available in every location, so check current local listings. Hasbro’s 2026 announcement includes details of the planned celebration.
What is the Transformers story about?
Hasbro describes the central conflict as one between the heroic Autobots and the Decepticons. In the company’s account, Autobots seek to protect life, while Decepticons seek conquest. The precise characters, settings, and storylines vary among productions, so this rivalry is a useful starting point rather than a guarantee that different screen or comic stories share the same continuity.

The franchise’s reach also extends beyond animation and comics. Hasbro’s descriptions encompass movies, television, comics, toys, and digital media; its 2024 anniversary announcement also named music, apparel, and licensed collectibles. That range helps explain why “Transformers history” can mean several things: the evolution of the toys, a particular screen story, or the publishing record.

| Starting point | Best for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Toys and figures | Exploring the transformation concept hands-on or collecting character designs | Compare the character or design era, scale, articulation, completeness, and whether the figure is aimed at play or collecting. A HasLab page documents the Omega Prime combination and its dimensions and features, but does not establish current retail availability: Hasbro Pulse HasLab. |
| Comics and graphic novels | Following the publishing strand that accompanied the 1984 launch | Check whether an edition collects original-era material or later stories, and confirm its contents and availability. Hasbro announced collections of the Marvel series as part of its publishing activity; that announcement is not a current inventory listing. |
| Screen stories | Watching the franchise’s animated or film history | Distinguish the original 1984 animated series from the 1986 movie and later productions. Release period and continuity matter more than treating all screen stories as one uninterrupted timeline. |
Why the anniversary matters
Transformers has lasted through a repeatable idea: recognizable characters can move between a robot identity and another form, while new stories and products reinterpret them across media. Hasbro’s 2024 and 2026 announcements document anniversaries, releases, and collaborations, but they do not provide an independently measured audience or market-size figure. The anniversary is therefore best understood through the franchise’s documented history and changing formats, rather than an unsupported claim about how many people it reaches.
