Russell Shaw returns when Colter disappears during a search for a missing father. The rescue brings the brothers together in a case involving unexplained numbers, a restricted government site and a possible connection to their own father, Ashton. But Colter and Russell get Scott Palmer home without resolving what Ashton showed them—or what their sister Dory has kept from Colter.
What is “Ontological Shock” about?
“Ontological Shock” is Tracker season 2, episode 2, which aired October 20, 2024. The official CBS episode guide says Colter vanishes while looking for a missing father, prompting Reenie to recruit his brother Russell, played by Jensen Ackles. The episode was written by Sharon Lee Watson and Travis Donelly and directed by Aprill Winney, according to CBS’s announcement.
How does Colter disappear?
Colter is trying to find Scott Palmer, whose daughter has hired him. Scott has been investigating claims involving unidentified aerial phenomena and says he has been followed. His trail leads Colter to Blair, an astrophysics professor whose husband has obtained a restraining order against Scott, according to TV Insider’s episode recap.
Colter tracks down Scott’s car and calls Bobby, but the call cuts out. Strange numbers appear on Colter’s phone, followed by a light overhead. He enters a secure Department of Defense site and is detained there. When he stops responding, Reenie turns to Russell for help.

Does Russell find Colter?
Yes. Russell locates Colter at the facility and gets him out. He says he was nearby while cleaning up a job for private contractors, but offers little detail about what he has been doing since he last returned to Colter’s life.
The apparent escape is not the end of the danger: Russell realizes Colter has been released with a tracker planted in him and removes it. The brothers’ contrasting instincts also shape the case. Russell is more willing than Colter to entertain the idea that the unexplained lights they saw as boys were real, rather than dismissing them as a childhood mystery.

What do the numbers and the government site have to do with Scott?
Colter and Russell return to Blair. She suggests the numbers that appeared on Scott’s phone—and then Colter’s—could be coordinates. They follow them toward the site where Scott is being held. There, an official who had detained Colter confronts Russell and links him to Ashton Shaw, the brothers’ father.
Blair is later found dead, with her death made to look like suicide, TV Insider reports. The episode presents the site and the strange signals as part of a larger mystery, but does not establish a complete explanation for what is happening there.

How do Colter and Russell get Scott home?
At the site, Colter finds Scott, who wants to stay and see what happens. Colter persuades him to leave by emphasizing the danger and reminding him that his daughter is waiting for him. The brothers escape amid an alarm, a bright light and shaking at the facility, then return Scott to his daughter.
Russell leaves with a piece of alloy he took from the facility. He suspects it may have come from a craft; Colter remains unconvinced. The find gives Russell something tangible to hold on to, but it does not settle what the brothers encountered.

What does Russell know about Ashton Shaw?
The episode raises the possibility that Russell knows more about their father, but stops short of confirming it. Colter asks about the box of Ashton’s belongings that their sister, Dory, has kept. Russell suggests Dory wanted to keep Colter from going down a rabbit hole, without explaining whether he knows what is in the box or why she held on to it. TVLine’s recap also notes that unresolved conversation.
Russell drops Colter near his truck and heads toward Colorado. He mentions that Reenie promised him a date for helping out. The brothers part with the case closed for Scott, but the questions surrounding Ashton—and Dory’s box—still open.
