Toxic Town is a four-part Netflix drama about mothers in Corby who campaign for accountability after babies are born with disabilities. Written by Jack Thorne and based on the real Corby poisonings, it is a scripted dramatization—not a documentary or a substitute for the historical and legal record.
What is Toxic Town about?
The series follows mothers in Corby, an English town, as they seek answers and accountability over alleged toxic-waste mismanagement. Netflix’s synopsis describes their fight after babies are born with disabilities. The story begins in 1995 and follows the mothers’ campaign as it develops.
Netflix announced Toxic Town in 2023 as a four-part limited series written by Jack Thorne and produced by Broke & Bones. Thorne called the Corby Toxic Waste Case “one of those moments in history that is defining.”
Is Toxic Town based on a true story?
Yes. Netflix says the series is based on the Corby poisonings, a real environmental scandal and legal case. The show dramatizes the mothers’ campaign; it is not a documentary, and its scenes and character portrayals should not be treated as a complete account of what happened or as court findings.

For historical context, TIME’s 2025 account says a 2009 ruling connected birth defects with negligent management of toxic waste in the air. That is secondary reporting. A later Court of Appeal judgment mentions the Corby litigation as an example of group litigation, but it is not the original Corby judgment and does not establish the details of that case.
Who stars in Toxic Town?
Jodie Whittaker plays Susan McIntyre, Aimee Lou Wood plays Tracey Taylor and Claudia Jessie plays Maggie Mahon. Netflix’s title page also names Rory Kinnear among the stars. Netflix’s original commissioning announcement named Robert Carlyle and Brendan Coyle among the cast as well; that announcement was not presented as a complete cast list.

Is Toxic Town a documentary?
No. Netflix Tudum describes it as a dramatization. Its focus is the mothers’ perspective and their effort to hold those responsible to account, while the historical case and its legal record are separate. Jack Thorne described the story as “a genuinely working-class story.” That is the writer’s characterization, not a legal or scientific conclusion.
Netflix’s official page provides the series description and current title information at Watch Toxic Town. Netflix’s commissioning announcement gives the original four-part format and production details at About Netflix. Netflix Tudum’s series guide covers the cast and dramatization; TIME’s account of the case offers secondary historical context. For clarity, a separate Court of Appeal judgment that mentions Corby is available at Jalla v Shell; it is not the original Corby judgment.
