Toxic Smoke, Fragile Lives is a 3News documentary report by journalist Christian Yalley about air pollution and informal e-waste work in and around Agbogbloshie, Accra. It follows the search for recoverable copper from discarded electronics, including the burning of some cables, while also pointing to traffic, general waste and cooking as sources of pollution. The story centres on workers’ livelihoods and exposure—not on e-waste burning as the sole explanation for poor air quality.
What is Toxic Smoke, Fragile Lives about?
The report looks at informal workers who dismantle discarded electronics and recover materials for sale. Some cables are burned to separate copper from their coverings. That work takes place alongside other activities that affect local air quality, including vehicle emissions, general waste and household or commercial cooking.

The documentary’s central tension is practical as well as environmental: recycling provides a livelihood, but some recovery methods expose workers and nearby residents to smoke and other pollutants. The reporting does not establish how much each source contributes relative to the others.
What does the documentary report about health and exposure?
Interviewees describe health concerns connected with polluted air. Florence Kuukyi, Accra Metropolitan Assembly Director of Public Health, told 3News that “There has been an increase in cardiovascular diseases, upper respiratory diseases, asthma and all that.” This is attributed public-health commentary; it does not by itself establish that a specific pollutant caused any particular illness.

Scrap dealer Issah Kwaku warned that “Burning of the airbag is very dangerous and can kill a lot of people.” The report attributes a fatal airbag-burning incident to his account. The available coverage does not independently verify that incident, so it should be understood as an interview claim rather than a confirmed finding.
What does the report say about air-quality measurements?
3News says its documentary assessment found elevated pollutants and discusses fine particulate matter, including PM2.5. Related coverage also describes an air-quality sensor installed at Agbogbloshie. The reporting available here does not provide complete sampling methods, dates or a detailed dataset, so it is not possible to assess the readings fully or compare pollution sources by their measured contributions.
In a separate 3News report published October 1, 2026, Kuukyi said “About 80% of the burial permits” received by her office listed cardiovascular or upper respiratory disease among the causes of death. The article does not provide the underlying permit records, denominator, method or causal analysis. The figure should not be read as an estimate of deaths caused by air pollution.

3News reported on September 30, 2026 that Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were collaborating on a national air-quality data hub. EPA Director of Sustainability and Circular Economy Larry Kotoe said the aim was to put monitoring systems on one platform so people could visualise air quality in particular areas. The hub was described as in development; the report does not establish that it is operational or that it has reduced emissions.
