On 17 May 2021, PerthNow reported that Australian Olympic snowboarder Torah Bright had shared a photo breastfeeding her son while doing a headstand. The image drew both praise and criticism online; Bright later joked that it was not a sustainable way to breastfeed.
What the 2021 report said
PerthNow described Bright’s social-media posts as including intimate photographs of her breastfeeding her son in different settings. One showed her in a headstand while nursing. The outlet reported that the image prompted a mixed response: some commenters found it playful or impressive, while others objected to its perceived message or expressed concern about the infant’s safety. These were commenters’ reactions, not a medical assessment of the pose.
Bright’s remark, as quoted by PerthNow from an Instagram story, was: “Disclaimer: This is not a sustainable breastfeeding practise!” The report also quoted her urging mothers to support one another and accept that motherhood can look different from family to family. It reproduced her words as: “In my world, Mother’s should be each others cheer leaders. (It’s hard enough) embrace our quirkiness and finding the joy in every shitty thing that is motherhood,” and “We all do it differently. It is not wrong or right. Motherhood is pure.” These quotations are attributed here to PerthNow’s report, rather than presented as independently verified transcripts of Bright’s original posts. Bright’s Olympic background
The headline’s Olympic context refers to Bright’s snowboarding career, not to the breastfeeding image as an athletic feat. The Olympic Library identifies her as the Australian half-pipe gold medalist at Vancouver 2010. PerthNow also noted that she won silver at Sochi in 2014. Olympic Library: Torah Bright.

What the image does—and does not—establish
The report documents one photo and the reactions it received in May 2021. It does not establish that the headstand was intended as a repeatable demonstration, nor does it provide clinical evidence about breastfeeding positions or infant safety. Bright’s own joke explicitly described the pose as not sustainable. The story is best understood as a brief social-media moment that prompted discussion about motherhood and public reactions, not as breastfeeding guidance.
