The best iPad comic app depends on what you read and how you obtain it. Marvel Unlimited is the natural choice for Marvel’s archive, DC Universe Infinite for DC, Panels for your own CBZ/CBR library, Shonen Jump for mainstream manga, and GlobalComix for broad publisher and independent-comics discovery. This guide updates the requested 2025 buying advice for the U.S. market as of August 2026.
Choose the type of comic app first
- Publisher subscriptions: Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe Infinite and Shonen Jump provide licensed catalogues from one publishing group.
- Multi-publisher subscriptions: GlobalComix mixes licensed and independent comics and manga.
- Owned-file readers: Panels organizes files you already own and selected DRM-free purchases.
- Webcomic platforms: WEBTOON and Tapas focus on vertical-scroll series rather than conventional page-based comics.
Apple’s comic-app collection illustrates this split, listing publisher services, webcomic platforms, library lending and file readers together: Apple’s comic-app collection.

1. Marvel Unlimited: best for Marvel readers
What you get
Marvel advertises more than 30,000 issues, covering long-running series such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four. The catalogue count is dynamic and may include different editions or formats; treat it as a current marketing figure rather than a permanent total. See Marvel Unlimited and the iPad app listing.
iPad and offline features
Compatible iPads can download issues for offline reading. Infinity Comics add vertically formatted stories alongside standard page layouts. Downloads are temporary subscription access, not exportable ownership, and the account may need periodic authorization.

Ownership, downloads and cancellation
Access is not ownership
- Subscriptions: Reading continues while the account and subscription remain active; downloaded issues can become inaccessible after cancellation.
- Individual purchases: Usually remain in the vendor account but may be DRM-bound and dependent on that vendor’s apps and authorization.
- DRM-free files: Specific Panels Store offerings can generally be backed up and used in compatible readers under their licence terms.
- Library lending: Hoopla access depends on a participating public library and its lending catalogue.
Before downloading for a trip
- Confirm whether downloads expire or require periodic revalidation.
- Check whether every desired title, rather than only selected books, is downloadable.
- Leave enough iPad storage for high-resolution pages.
- Do not assume downloads can be exported to another reader.
Cancellation is handled by the billing channel. Marvel directs subscribers to account subscription management at Marvel Support; Shonen Jump memberships and auto-renewal purchased through Apple are managed in the App Store account.
Alternatives for specific reading habits
Individual digital purchases
Kindle/Comixology, Apple Books and VIZ Manga can suit readers who prefer buying individual volumes. The purchasing and reading workflow may differ between Amazon, Apple and the publisher, so verify current iPad support before buying.
Vertical-scroll webcomics
WEBTOON and Tapas are better fits when your priority is mobile-first, vertical-scroll storytelling rather than page-based comics or CBZ files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Library borrowing
Hoopla can be free or low-cost with an eligible library card, but participating libraries set both the available catalogue and borrowing limits.
Other file readers
Apps such as Chunky appear in older recommendations, but maintenance and iPadOS compatibility must be checked in the current listing. A Reddit report about a later iPadOS release is anecdotal, not verified testing: discussion on Reddit.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the app and desired series are available in your country.
- Check the current minimum iPadOS version; Shonen Jump currently lists iPadOS 17 or later.
- Decide whether you need a back catalogue, current issues, manga chapters, webcomics or personal files.
- Check release delays, rotating availability and plan-specific restrictions.
- Verify download limits, expiration and reauthorization requirements.
- Look for portrait full-page reading, landscape spreads, guided view, right-to-left order and dark mode.
- For owned files, confirm archive formats, cloud integrations, metadata handling and reading-position sync.
- Check whether purchases are DRM-free or locked to a vendor account.
- Review Apple auto-renewal settings and the cancellation route before starting a trial.
- Check storage before downloading a large reading queue.
- For children or shared devices, review age ratings, mature-content controls and account-sharing rules.
Final decision guide
- Mostly Marvel: Marvel Unlimited.
- Mostly DC: DC Universe Infinite.
- Already own CBZ, CBR or EPUB files: Panels.
- Mostly One Piece, Naruto, Chainsaw Man or other Shonen Jump manga: Shonen Jump.
- Want indie and multi-publisher discovery: GlobalComix.
- Want everything: Compare the exact series, then combine one publisher service with Panels or individual purchases where ownership and catalogue breadth matter.
The Bottom Line
Match the app to the catalogue or files you actually use: Marvel Unlimited for Marvel, DC Universe Infinite for DC, Panels for owned comics, Shonen Jump for mainstream manga and GlobalComix for broader discovery.
