Hulu does not appear to publish a code-specific definition, so do not assume it proves slow internet, corrupted cache, or a Hulu outage. Diagnose the scope first, then work from the least disruptive fix to the most disruptive.
Start by replaying the title, trying another title, and force-closing Hulu. If every title fails, test another device or network before resetting equipment.
First determine what is failing
The pattern tells you where to look:

Hulu’s displayed instruction is to restart the video or choose something else to watch. Third-party coverage documents the same message and common remedies, while Hulu’s public help pages provide general playback guidance rather than a dedicated definition for 2(-998). 11 fixes, in the safest order
1. Replay the video
- Return to Hulu’s home screen.
- Open the same movie or episode again.
- If it fails, try a different title.
If several other titles play, the original item may have a temporary metadata, delivery, rights, or live-content issue. Test both on-demand and live programming when available before changing the device.

2. Try another title
Playing a different movie or episode is the quickest diagnostic test. One-title failures should be reported as title-specific; resetting the entire app is unlikely to repair a problem limited to one item.
3. Force-close Hulu and reopen it
A home-screen exit can leave an app suspended. Close it fully, then launch it again. Menu labels vary by version.
- iPhone or iPad: Open the App Switcher and swipe Hulu away.
- Android: Settings > Apps > Hulu > Force stop.
- Fire TV: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Hulu > Force stop.
- Google TV or Android TV: Settings > Apps > Hulu > Force stop.
- Windows: Close Hulu completely; use Task Manager to end its process if necessary.

4. Check whether Hulu has a service problem
Before repeatedly clearing data, test another streaming service, try Hulu in a browser or on another device, and check Hulu’s current support notices. An outage monitor can indicate a wider incident but may mix local ISP reports with genuine service failures. Hulu does not appear to provide a prominent dedicated public status dashboard in the sources available here.

5. Test and improve your internet connection
- Confirm the device is on the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Check whether websites and other streaming services work.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streams.
- Move closer to the router or use Ethernet where practical.
- Try a phone hotspot briefly. If Hulu works there, your home network or ISP path is implicated.

6. Power-cycle the complete setup
- Close Hulu and turn off the streaming device or TV.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and let it finish starting.
- Reconnect the router and wait for internet service.
- Restart the streaming device and test Hulu.
This can clear temporary connection and device state problems. It cannot fix a Hulu outage, an unsupported device, an account restriction, or a persistent software defect. Hulu: Improve your internet connection
7. Clear Hulu’s cache or app data
Use this when the app repeatedly fails on one device. Clearing cache is the less disruptive option; clearing data or resetting the app can remove sign-in information and local preferences.

- Android or Android TV: Usually Settings > Apps > Hulu > Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Fire TV: Usually Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Hulu > Clear cache.
- Windows: In Hulu’s app settings, choose Repair before Reset when available.
- Browser: Clear Hulu’s site data, or test a private window and another supported browser first.

8. Update Hulu, your browser, and device software
Update the Hulu app from the official store, the TV or streaming-stick firmware, the host operating system, and your browser if you watch on the web. Updates can repair compatibility defects. If the error began immediately after an update, record the version and timing and contact Hulu rather than installing an unofficial older app.

9. Check compatibility and disable VPNs or filtering
Confirm that the device is supported, its operating system is current, the app came from the official store, and enough storage remains for updates. An obsolete or unsupported device may not have a permanent software fix; see Hulu: Device no longer supported.

For diagnosis, temporarily disconnect VPNs and proxies, disable browser extensions that block scripts or media, and try a personal network instead of a corporate or school connection. DNS filters, ad blockers, privacy relays, and managed networks can interfere with location checks, authorization, advertising calls, or delivery. Re-enable tools one at a time after playback works. 10. Sign out and sign back in
- Open Hulu’s account or profile menu and sign out.
- Restart the device.
- Open Hulu and sign back in.
- Retry the title.
Have your password or account-recovery method ready. This refreshes the local authentication session but will not repair an outage or unsupported hardware.
11. Reinstall Hulu, then contact support
Reinstall only after the earlier steps fail:
- Uninstall Hulu.
- Restart the device.
- Install Hulu from the official app store.
- Sign in and test playback.
Reinstallation can replace damaged local files, but it will not solve a title that fails everywhere or a Hulu-side incident. Contact Hulu through the Hulu Help Center if the error persists.

- iPhone and iPad: iOS does not expose Android-style cache controls; force-close, update, sign out, or reinstall instead.
- Android, Android TV, and Fire TV: Force-stop and clear-cache paths are usually available, but manufacturer labels differ.
- Windows and browsers: Prefer a private-window or alternate-browser test before deleting all browser data. Browser-wide clearing signs you out of unrelated sites.
- Smart TVs, Roku, and consoles: Options vary by model. Look for an app restart, system update, sign-out, or reinstall; do not factory-reset the TV or console for one playback code.
Advanced tests and common mistakes
DNS changes are not a guaranteed fix
Flushing DNS or changing DNS servers is sometimes suggested for Windows and network problems, but the available Hulu documentation does not identify DNS as a specific cause of 2(-998). Treat it as an advanced, conditional network test after comparing Wi-Fi with a hotspot—not as the standard first remedy. Windows Club
Avoid excessive resets and unofficial downloads
- Do not repeatedly restart a single title when other titles already work.
- Do not factory-reset a TV or router for this error alone.
- Do not install an unofficial APK or “error fixer”; it creates security and compatibility risks.
- Do not buy a new streaming device unless the current one is unsupported, cannot update, or fails with multiple services.
- Do not infer an expired subscription from this code. Check account status in Hulu.
When to stop local troubleshooting
Stop resetting equipment and escalate when the error survives another-title testing, appears on multiple supported devices and more than one network, coincides with a known Hulu incident, or occurs on hardware Hulu no longer supports. Tell support:
