What made Tony Todd’s Candyman performance so memorable?
In Bernard Rose’s 1992 film Candyman, Todd played Daniel Robitaille, the figure at the center of a ghost story rooted in fear, violence and urban legend. His resonant voice and measured, imposing screen presence gave the character an unmistakable weight. The role became the one most closely associated with him, but it was part of a much longer career rather than its entirety.
Todd returned as Robitaille in the 2021 Candyman sequel. The Associated Press noted both performances in its report on his death. Across the two films, his connection to the character linked the original story to a later generation of viewers.

What did Tony Todd act in besides Candyman?
A selection of Todd’s other screen work shows how often he moved between genres and kinds of roles. He appeared in Oliver Stone’s Vietnam War film Platoon, Clint Eastwood’s jazz drama Bird, the comic-book adaptation The Crow, the action thriller The Rock and the supernatural thriller Final Destination. The AP report highlights Platoon and Final Destination; The Guardian’s obituary and the Television Academy biography point to additional representative credits, including Bird, The Crow and The Rock.
These titles suggest a performer not confined to horror: Todd could inhabit military drama, biography, action and comic-book worlds as well as supernatural stories. This is a selection, not a complete filmography; the available sources do not establish a reliable career-wide credit total.

How was Tony Todd remembered?
Following Todd’s death, New Line Cinema paid tribute in a statement reported by the Associated Press: “The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony.” That is the studio’s tribute; the enduring significance of Todd’s work is also visible in the breadth of the roles audiences continue to associate with him.
Remembering Todd through Candyman is natural: the performance made him an indelible figure in horror. Remembering only that character would miss the broader body of work that carried him across decades and genres.
