His best-known screen role was Sal Boca in William Friedkin’s 1971 crime drama The French Connection. As The Washington Post obituary describes the character, Boca ran a Brooklyn diner as a front while helping a criminal syndicate smuggle heroin. The film won five Oscars, including best picture and best director.
More than the role of Sal Boca
Lo Bianco’s career was not limited to crime dramas or his association with The French Connection. The Washington Post obituary describes six decades of acting across Broadway and more than 100 film and television appearances. That count is the obituary’s career summary, not a separately audited filmography.

On stage, Lo Bianco also portrayed former New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia in a one-man show that he performed around the world, according to The Washington Post. The role connected him to New York history in a way distinct from the mobster character that made him widely recognizable on screen.
