Who is Tony Dokoupil replacing?
Dokoupil took over from the departing anchor team of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. The Associated Press reported on December 10, 2025, that both had announced they were leaving CBS. AP’s announcement-day report covered the transition.
What was Dokoupil’s role before the appointment?
Before moving to the evening broadcast, Dokoupil co-hosted CBS Mornings with Gayle King and Nate Burleson. CBS says he had held that role since 2019. CBS’s announcement describes him as an Emmy Award-winning journalist and cites reporting from Israel, Rome, Uvalde, Maui, California and Capitol Hill, as well as coverage of the war in Ukraine, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and the 2024 party conventions. What plans did CBS announce for his launch?
CBS said Dokoupil would spend his first month meeting viewers in cities and towns across the country as part of a kickoff tour. That was the network’s announced plan; the available announcements do not establish that every planned stop took place.

In the appointment announcement, Dokoupil said that after 20 years in journalism and traveling through all 50 states, he had come to believe “a country this big needs a show this ambitious.” The travel and experience description was his own characterization. CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said she believed Dokoupil could help win back trust in media, praising what she described as his commitment to asking hard questions and following facts. That was Weiss’s assessment, not a guarantee of how viewers would respond.
When and where can you watch CBS Evening News?
The January 2026 Paramount Press Express program description lists CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil on weekdays at 6:30 p.m. ET and advises viewers to check local listings. CBS’s appointment announcement identifies CBS as the broadcast outlet and Paramount+ as the streaming service.

CBS describes the program as its flagship evening broadcast, with coverage ranging across politics, education, technology, crime, consumer news, health, weather, sports, entertainment and human-interest stories. The network also calls it “America’s longest-running network newscast” and says it began nearly 80 years ago as CBS TV NEWS. Ratings figures published by the Associated Press on December 10, 2025, provide a snapshot of the competitive context at the time of the announcement—not current audience levels. AP cited Nielsen figures showing an average of 4.04 million nightly viewers for CBS Evening News, compared with 7.83 million for ABC’s World News Tonight and 6.19 million for NBC’s NBC Nightly News. AP also reported that the CBS broadcast was down 16% in viewers versus 2024 in the comparison it described. These figures are period-specific, and they do not establish that the anchor appointment caused any ratings change.
