The company attributed the decision to business pressures, including the yen’s devaluation, lower-priced competitors, shrinking market share, and difficulty securing partnerships or funding. The “controversial” label refers to disputes described in secondary coverage, not to the company’s stated reason for closing.
What Tonari Animation announced
In a January 17, 2025 post on X, Tonari Animation wrote: “After four incredible years, Tonari Animation, Inc. is ceasing operations. Please read the full announcement here:” The announcement’s four-year figure is the studio’s own description of its operating period, not an independently audited calculation. Read the statement as reproduced by reporting.
The fuller statement, reported as signed by founder and CEO Jarrett Martin, said the company had made the decision after careful consideration. It cited the yen’s devaluation, competition from lower-priced companies, shrinking market share, and an inability to secure partnerships or funding needed to sustain growth. These are Tonari’s stated reasons; the statement does not independently establish how much each factor contributed.
Why coverage called the studio controversial
Secondary coverage described disputes involving Tonari Animation and an NFT anime project, support for creative AI use and NFT sales, a canceled fundraising campaign for an anime production guide, and criticism of a production assistant job posting. Coverage of the reported controversies recounts those disputes; it does not independently adjudicate the claims. The available evidence therefore supports describing them as reported controversies, not as established findings or as causes of the shutdown.

- Established by the announcement: Tonari Animation said on January 17, 2025, that it was ceasing operations after four years.
- Attributed to the company: the business pressures it listed as reasons for the decision.
- Reported separately: the controversies described in secondary coverage and Martin’s move to Creative Freaks.
- Not established: that the controversies caused the shutdown, or that Creative Freaks acquired Tonari Animation.
A January 21, 2025 syndicated CBR story used the headline framing “Controversial Anime Studio Announces Shutdown After 4 Years.” The syndicated story listing supplies that headline context. The closure statement itself described business conditions, not controversy, as the reason.
