On August 11, 2022, Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee posted a nude image on Instagram and Facebook with the caption “Ooooopppsss.” The Instagram post disappeared hours later, but contemporary reports did not establish whether Lee deleted it or Instagram removed it. Lee later said the post followed a bender during a break from touring.

Why the Instagram post disappeared
The image was gone from Instagram within hours. The Independent’s August 11 report did not determine whether Lee took the post down or Instagram removed it. PerthNow reported the next day that it had disappeared after about five hours; that was a contemporary estimate, not a platform-confirmed measurement. PerthNow also said his Twitter post remained visible when its story was published on August 12. That report does not establish whether the post is available now.
The moderation debate
The incident prompted discussion of how social platforms enforce rules on nudity. Some contemporary commentary argued that moderation was inconsistent. That criticism was part of the debate around Lee’s post; the coverage does not prove a platform-wide pattern of unequal enforcement. The Independent’s August 12 opinion piece is commentary on that issue, rather than independent evidence establishing how moderation works across platforms.

Lee’s later explanation
At a Mötley Crüe concert in San Antonio later in August, Lee attributed the post to a bender during a break from touring. The Los Angeles Times reported his onstage remark: “I got f— sideways as f— and got naked and posted pictures of my d— .” This was an account of his concert remarks, not a separately recorded interview.
