Tombstone: Why Doc Holliday Says “This Is Funny” Before He Dies

Doc Holliday’s “This is funny” line follows a specific sight: his bare feet sticking out from beneath the sheets as the last rites begin.

In Tombstone, Doc Holliday notices his bare feet as a priest begins giving him the last rites. That small, incongruous sight prompts his line: “I’ll be damned… This is funny.” The screenplay’s joke comes from the clash between the solemnity of the moment and Doc’s attention to an ordinary detail—not from an explanation that death itself is funny.

What Doc sees before he says it

As Father Feeney starts the last rites, the screenplay has Doc look toward the end of the bed. His bare feet are sticking out from under the sheets. Doc smiles, looks at Feeney, and says, “I’ll be damned… This is funny.” The physical detail gives the remark its immediate referent: in the middle of a grave, formal ritual, Doc is amused by the sight of his own uncovered feet.

That reading is grounded in the screenplay’s stage direction. It makes the line a darkly comic observation about the scene’s incongruity, rather than an unexplained declaration about dying. The script then cuts to a Denver theater performance of H.M.S. Pinafore; in the adjoining dialogue, Doc remarks that he never thought he would see Gilbert and Sullivan performed in Denver. The transcript page captures that transition, while the screenplay excerpt supplies the bare-feet action.

What the line does—and what it does not prove

The bare feet turn a deathbed scene away from grand last words. Doc’s attention lands on a mundane visual detail while a priest performs a solemn rite; the humor comes from that mismatch. The cut to the theater extends the transition from the bedside to a performance, but the screenplay excerpt does not establish that the line is a coded reference to the opera or to a particular historical event.

This is an explanation of the film scene, not evidence of Doc Holliday’s historical last words. The available screenplay material does not establish that the real Holliday made this remark, noticed bare feet in this way, or supplied the scene’s underlying joke.

Screenplay wording and the film’s evolving ending

The screenplay excerpt prints the line as “I’ll be damned… This is funny.” The transcript page punctuates it, “I’ll be damned. This is funny.” The shortened phrase in the title is not the complete wording shown in either text. These hosted texts help explain the scene, but they are not identified as an official studio transcript or a verified record of every detail in a particular release.

  • Wyatt Earp's plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona, are disrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating and results in the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

In an October 2023 True West Magazine interview excerpt, Kurt Russell said of Kevin Jarre’s hospital scene, “There was a great scene written by Kevin Jarre for that, but because of the things we’d done, I was trying to lead to a different ending.” His comment indicates that the hospital scene and the film’s ending were part of an evolving production. It does not, by itself, explain the specific intent behind each final-cut decision.
