There are three released live-action Tomb Raider movies. Watch them in release order: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), then Tomb Raider (2018). The first two star Angelina Jolie and share a continuity; the 2018 film stars Alicia Vikander and is a reboot, not a continuation of Jolie’s story.
All Tomb Raider movies in release order
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) — Angelina Jolie plays Lara Croft in the first film of the original screen run. Paramount classifies it as PG-13 and lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital formats on its title page.
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003) — Jolie returns in the sequel. Paramount’s synopsis follows Lara as she tries to stop a scientist from using Pandora’s Box for mass annihilation, travelling from Greece to Hong Kong to Kenya and beyond.
- Tomb Raider (2018) — Alicia Vikander takes over as Lara in a reboot. The U.S. listing gives the release date as March 16, 2018; this movie begins a separate continuity rather than picking up the events of the Jolie films.
How the movies connect
The 2001 film and The Cradle of Life make up the Jolie-led two-film story: the 2003 title is a direct sequel to the 2001 movie. The 2018 film resets the movie continuity with a new lead, so watching it after the first two follows release history but does not imply that its Lara is the same version who appeared in them.
There is no need to rearrange the films for a different chronological viewing order: release order is the clearest sequence for the three released live-action features covered here.
What is next for the Tomb Raider screen franchise?
Amazon has announced that a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, starring Sophie Turner and created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is in production. That is a separate series project, not a fourth released live-action feature film. The announcement does not establish when it will be available to watch.
