Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is best understood as a continuation of the Survivor trilogy, not a reboot or a standalone retelling of Lara Croft’s origin. Across two seasons, it asks whether a wounded, increasingly isolated Lara can grow into the more assured adventurer fans recognize while still delivering the relic hunts, danger, and globe-spanning mystery that define the franchise. The answer is mixed: the character arc gives the series a worthwhile direction, but the balance between emotional drama and archaeological adventure is less consistent.
Where the series fits in Lara Croft’s story
Netflix positions the series after Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018). Creator and showrunner Tasha Huo has described it as connective tissue between that trilogy’s origin-story Lara and the more established action-adventure icon. That framing gives the show a clear purpose: it is not just another Lara Croft adventure, but a story about what she becomes after surviving the trilogy.
The premise gives that transition emotional stakes. In season 1, Lara is isolated and pulled back into action after a powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor. Its pursuit takes her around the world and forces her to confront her identity and the kind of hero she wants to be. The series’ strongest idea is that grief and self-reliance can make Lara formidable while also keeping her from the people who might help her.
Does Lara’s character arc work?
The focus on grief and isolation makes the animated series feel like a continuation of the games rather than a loose collection of relic hunts. Huo said season 1 is about Lara embracing her father’s isolating response to grief. For season 2, Huo described a shift toward building Lara’s team, moving her from lone-wolf thinking toward recognizing the people supporting her. Those are creator-stated intentions; how compelling they feel depends on how much a viewer wants character drama alongside the adventure.

#1 Best Overall
- Dark Horse presents Lara Croft (Survivor Era) from Tomb Raider as a PVC Statue
- Measures approximately 11 inches tall
- Stands on a rugged rock base (8.4 inch wide by 10 inch deep)
- Lara is equipped for survival, with her bow, climbing axe, and torch
The bridge between the Survivor-era Lara and the familiar icon is therefore the series’ central measure of success. Lara’s growth has a legible direction, but a character arc can only carry so much if the surrounding story does not give it memorable obstacles and payoffs. Published responses to season 1 reflect that divide. Decider’s Maddy Casale praised its “action, mystery, and a sincere emotional core,” while IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey called the characters, story, and animation mediocre, despite finding the eight-episode story not bad outside the main villain’s arc. Empire’s David Opie called it “an uneven bridge between the old and new of the Tomb Raider franchise.” Those are distinct critical views, not a single consensus.
How well does the show deliver Tomb Raider adventure?
The premise promises the franchise’s familiar ingredients—travel, dangerous artifacts, and peril—alongside Lara’s personal struggle. Season 1’s stolen Chinese artifact supplies a concrete reason to move between locations, while season 2 widens the scope: Netflix’s official synopsis centers on stolen African Orisha masks, Lara teaming up with Sam, and a dangerous billionaire seeking the artifacts’ hidden power. That gives the second season a clear adventure engine without requiring viewers to treat its fictional mystery as a guide to the real cultural or historical meaning of Orisha traditions.

- Meticulously crafted statue captures Lara with fierce determination and character
- Measures 9.2” tall, 9.4”wide, and 6.3” deep
- Includes swappable arms with pistol and climbing axe
The challenge for this kind of adaptation is balance. If the interpersonal conflict and exposition dominate, the series can feel less like an expedition and more like a character drama wearing Tomb Raider’s name. If the artifacts are only a pretext for action, Lara’s emotional development loses weight. Published season 1 criticism ranges from praise for its mystery and emotional core to complaints about story and animation, suggesting that the mix does not land equally for every viewer.
Season 2: a larger story and a small critic sample
Season 2 brings Sam into the central story and shifts Huo’s stated character direction toward Lara relying on a team. Netflix’s official logline sets up the Orisha masks and the billionaire pursuing them; the available official synopsis does not establish further plot details, so expectations are best kept to that broad setup. Inverse’s Lyvie Scott wrote that the second season offers “a new and truly exciting path for the Tomb Raider franchise,” contrasting it with what Scott saw as season 1’s familiar world-ending threat. FandomWire’s Callie Hanna praised Karen Fukuhara as Sam and her chemistry with Hayley Atwell’s Lara, while noting that their relationship stays at the level of subtext.

That praise is useful context, not a definitive verdict: Rotten Tomatoes’ season 2 page showed only three critic reviews in the snapshot accessed in 2026. Metacritic’s season 2 page had no critic reviews at access time. There is not enough critic coverage in those snapshots to claim broad critical agreement about the second season.

Reception: separate scores for each season
Rotten Tomatoes’ live scores are snapshots, not permanent ratings. The figures below are from pages accessed in 2026; audience counts are rounded as listed.
| Season | Critic score and sample | Audience score and sample |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | 70% Tomatometer, 23 critic reviews (Rotten Tomatoes, accessed 2026) | 34% Popcornmeter, 500+ audience ratings (Rotten Tomatoes, accessed 2026) |
| Season 2 | Three critic reviews listed; Rotten Tomatoes did not provide a stable consensus score in the cited snapshot | 56% Popcornmeter, 100+ audience ratings (Rotten Tomatoes, accessed 2026) |
The scores point to mixed reception rather than a settled judgment, especially for season 2, whose critic sample is very small. They do not reveal why individual viewers liked or disliked the show, so the reviews themselves offer more useful context than a percentage alone.
