Tom Noonan, the actor, writer and director whose unsettling screen roles included Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter and Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad, died on February 14, 2026, aged 74. The Guardian reported the death on February 18, citing confirmation from The Monster Squad director Fred Dekker.
What happened to Tom Noonan?
Noonan died on February 14, 2026. Fred Dekker publicly confirmed his death; The Guardian reported Dekker’s statement on February 18: “It’s with great sadness that I share the passing of Tom Noonan.” The Guardian’s report also noted Dekker’s memory of Noonan’s performance as Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad.
A cause of death was not announced in the February 18 report by Forbes. That describes what was known in that report; it does not establish whether a cause was disclosed later.
How old was Tom Noonan?
Noonan was 74. The Television Academy lists his birth date as April 12, 1951, and his passing as February 14, 2026. It records his birthplace as Greenwich, Connecticut. Television Academy biography.

What was Tom Noonan known for?
Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter
Noonan played Francis Dollarhyde, also called the Tooth Fairy, in Michael Mann’s 1986 crime thriller Manhunter. His quiet, unnerving portrayal is central to the film’s impact and remains one of the roles most closely associated with him. In its obituary, The Guardian quoted Noonan describing his approach: “Making ‘bad people’ seem human is the key to making them scary.” The Guardian obituary.
Memorable genre-film roles
Noonan’s other recognizable film credits included Cain in RoboCop 2, Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad, a role called Ripper in Last Action Hero, and a part in Michael Mann’s Heat. These roles show the range of his character work across science fiction, horror, action and crime films; his career was not defined by a single part. The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times covered his screen career.
Television and theatre
His television credits included Damages, Hell on Wheels and 12 Monkeys. Noonan also worked in theatre, alongside his film and television acting. The Television Academy’s biography records his television career.

Noonan also wrote and directed. What Happened Was… grew out of his stage play, according to Legacy’s obituary listing, which says the film won the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. The project reflects a career that extended beyond acting into writing for the stage and screen and directing his own work.
