Tom Holland said he stepped in when two men were fighting at a Los Angeles Whole Foods, and that one recognized him as Spider-Man. But he has not announced when he will quit acting: the comments cited in coverage describe a year-long break in 2023 and career uncertainty in 2021, not a retirement date.
What Tom Holland said happened at the grocery store
In an interview recounted by TheWrap on January 2, 2025, Holland said two men were fighting behind him at a Whole Foods in Los Angeles. He said he grabbed one of the men and pulled him away. The reports do not identify the branch.
Holland said the person recognized him and seemed to take in the oddity of being told to calm down by Spider-Man: “I can see that he’s recognized me immediately, and you could see the wheels turning, like, I’m really angry, but Spider-Man is telling me to calm down,” he recalled, as quoted by TheWrap. The remark captures Holland’s playful interpretation of the moment; it does not establish what the other person was thinking.
The Independent reported a similar account on January 3, 2025. It was unclear from the coverage whether the person later asked Holland for a photograph or autograph. The incident is presented as Holland’s account, not as an independently verified event.

Has Tom Holland announced when he’ll quit acting?
No. The dated comments reported by the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian do not give a retirement date. They refer to different things: a temporary break after a demanding production, and earlier uncertainty about whether to stay in acting.
2023: a year off after The Crowded Room
In June 2023, discussing The Crowded Room, Holland said he was taking a year off because making the show had been difficult. The Los Angeles Times quoted him: “And I’m now taking a year off, and you know, that is a result of how difficult this show was.” That was described as a year-long break, not a permanent departure from the profession.

2021: uncertainty about his long-term career
In December 2021, while promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland told Sky News he was unsure whether he wanted to continue acting and wanted to try other things after starting as an actor at age 11. The Guardian quoted him saying, “I don’t even know if I want to be an actor.” That expression of uncertainty did not specify when he might stop.

The grocery-store story is a reported anecdote about Holland intervening in a fight. The acting comments are separate statements made years earlier: one about taking a year off, another about questioning his career direction. Neither amounts to an announced quit date.
