The West Point Association of Graduates canceled the public ceremony planned for Tom Hanks as the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award recipient. The available reporting does not establish that Hanks lost the award, or that political pressure caused the cancellation.
What was canceled?
In June 2025, the West Point Association of Graduates announced Hanks as its planned recipient of the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award. The award ceremony and parade were scheduled for September 25. In an email circulated to faculty on September 5, association president and CEO retired Army Col. Mark Bieger said the association, in coordination with the Academy, would not hold the event as originally scheduled. The Washington Post reviewed and verified a copy of the email; the Associated Press also reported the cancellation.
The confirmed decision concerned the ceremony. The reporting does not say that Hanks’s award was revoked, that it was presented privately, or that he remained its recipient without a ceremony.
Why did the association say it canceled the ceremony?
Bieger’s explanation, as reported by the Washington Post and AP, invoked the Academy’s role in preparing cadets: “This decision allows the Academy to continue its focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.” That is the association’s stated rationale; the statement does not identify a political reason.

What was the political context?
The cancellation came amid political controversies involving the Trump administration and West Point. On September 8, 2025, President Donald Trump publicly praised the move, posting “Important move!” and “We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!!” He also called on other award shows to review their practices, according to AP.
Trump’s comments were a reaction to the cancellation, not the association’s explanation. The Washington Post reported that he appeared to conflate the Academy with the alumni association when he attributed the decision to “our great West Point.” The association announced the cancellation; the Academy was the institution whose mission Bieger cited. The reporting establishes political context and public reaction, but not that Trump or another official directed the association to act.
What is the Sylvanus Thayer Award?
Named for an early West Point superintendent known as the “Father of West Point,” the Sylvanus Thayer Award has been given annually since 1958, AP reports. It recognizes an outstanding U.S. citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify the ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country.”
When the association announced Hanks as its planned 2025 recipient, board chairman Robert McDonald pointed to his portrayals of service members in films including Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump and Greyhound, as well as his veterans advocacy. McDonald said Hanks had done “more for the positive portrayal of the American service member” and for veterans, their caregivers and families, as well as the American space program and branches of government, “than many other Americans.” Those were the chairman’s reasons for the selection, not evidence that the award was ultimately presented.

What remains unknown?
The reviewed reporting does not resolve whether the association later presented the award privately, retained Hanks as the recipient without a ceremony, or formally withdrew the honor. Without further confirmation, it is more accurate to say the ceremony was canceled than that Hanks was definitively “dropped” from the award.
