Tom Gleeson was one of the comedians who roasted John Cleese in Seven’s 2024 comedy special The Roast of John Cleese. According to PerthNow’s report on the broadcast, Gleeson opened by comparing Cleese with Bill Cosby and Rolf Harris, prompting laughs from Cleese at some of the set’s more outrageous jokes.
What did Tom Gleeson say about John Cleese?
PerthNow reported that Gleeson began his set by comparing Cleese with 1980s comedy figures Bill Cosby and Rolf Harris. The report described Gleeson’s jokes as among the evening’s biggest laugh-getters and said Cleese laughed off some of them; that is the publication’s account, not a published audience measurement. PerthNow’s report gives the broadcast context.
The roast also included praise alongside the jokes. PerthNow said Steve Vizard delivered the first roast, joking that Cleese had to be thawed out before acknowledging his influence on modern comedy.
When was The Roast of John Cleese recorded and broadcast?
The event was recorded at the Palladium at Crown in July 2023, then screened on Seven on Tuesday, 12 March 2024, according to PerthNow. It is a past broadcast, not a new or upcoming Seven special.
