In August 2012, media reports said Tom Cruise would pay $400,000 a year in child support for his daughter Suri until she turned 18. Multiplied across 12 years, that produces the $4.8 million total that circulated in headlines. The total is a projection built from that annual figure, and it comes from press reports citing people familiar with the divorce documents. It is not a published settlement and not a record of what was actually paid.
What the reports said
Two contemporaneous 2012 reports carry the same core terms. Both were published within days of each other, and both trace the figures back to TMZ and to people familiar with the court papers.
| Claim | Reported figure or term | Where it appeared |
|---|---|---|
| Annual child support | $400,000 per year | South China Morning Post, 26 August 2012, citing TMZ; Reuters report republished by Enstarz, 25 August 2012, relaying TMZ |
| Duration | Until Suri turns 18 | Same 2012 reports |
| Cumulative total | $4.8 million over 12 years | South China Morning Post, 2012; Reuters report republished by Enstarz, 2012 |
| Monthly amount | Not the reported figure; the reports describe $400,000 per year, not per month | South China Morning Post and Reuters via Enstarz, 2012 |
The distinction between annual and monthly matters most when readers compare numbers. A $400,000 monthly figure would total $57.6 million over the same 12 years. The reports did not describe that arrangement.
How the $4.8 million total is calculated
The $4.8 million figure is simple multiplication of the reported annual amount by the reported number of years. It is a projected cumulative total, not a single payment.

| Projected total ($400,000 × 12) | $4,800,000 |
Because the total is a sum over time, it describes what the arrangement would amount to if paid as reported for the full period. It does not describe money transferred at one time, and it does not confirm that every year was paid in full.
Where the numbers came from
The reports are secondhand. Readers should weigh them accordingly:

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
- South China Morning Post (26 August 2012) attributed the arrangement and the $4.8 million total to TMZ and to people familiar with the court documents.
- Reuters, republished by Enstarz (25 August 2012), relayed the same annual amount and duration. Reuters reported that Cruise’s attorney declined comment and that Katie Holmes’s lawyer did not respond to a request for confirmation.
No direct quotation from a named person about the specific amount was identified in these reports, and the reports do not reproduce settlement language.
What the reporting does not establish
- The settlement document itself. The reports describe its terms secondhand.
- A payment ledger or any official financial record showing how much was actually paid, or whether payments were made in full each year.
- Any on-the-record confirmation from either party, a court, or an official source at the time of the reports.
- Any legal conclusion beyond the reported terms.
Any statement that Cruise paid $4.8 million should be treated as a restatement of the projected total, not a verified payment amount.

Separate expenses reported alongside support
Later explanatory coverage adds that responsibility for certain costs was reported as well. A Distractify explainer, dated around 2019 (the exact date is not clear from the page reviewed), describes these categories:
- Medical and dental costs
- Insurance
- Education, including college
- Extracurricular activities
The available reporting does not establish whether these costs were counted inside the $400,000 annual figure or paid on top of it. Do not add them to the $4.8 million total, and do not treat the total as the full cost of raising Suri over the period.

When the reported support period ended
Suri turned 18 on 18 April 2024. A Brazilian outlet, UOL Splash, reported on 17 May 2024 that Cruise was released from the age-based support obligation after she reached that age. That is the end point the 2012 reports set, so the reported arrangement is not ongoing. The reporting says nothing about any broader legal conclusion, and nothing in it describes support payments continuing after 2024.
In short, the $400,000 figure and the $4.8 million total describe a reported arrangement that ran until Suri’s 18th birthday, not a current payment.
