At the London premiere of War of the Worlds on June 19, 2005, a man posing as a reporter sprayed Tom Cruise with water from a concealed pistol inside a joke microphone. Cruise objected immediately. Channel 4 apologized, and four crew members were arrested and released on bail. Contemporary reports do not establish that the prankster later regretted it.
What happened to Tom Cruise at the London premiere?
During Cruise’s red-carpet press walkabout in Leicester Square, a man posing as a reporter used a microphone that concealed a water pistol to spray him while he was speaking with journalists. The incident took place at the London premiere of War of the Worlds on Sunday, June 19, 2005. The Guardian’s contemporary report describes the prank and Cruise’s response.
It was a deliberate stunt, not an accidental microphone malfunction. Channel 4 later said it was connected to a new entertainment show involving pranks on celebrities and members of the public. The Guardian reported the broadcaster’s explanation.
How did Cruise respond?
Cruise objected while the exchange was taking place, saying: “That’s incredibly rude. I’m here giving you an interview and you do that … it’s incredibly rude.” The remark, quoted by Stephen Brook in The Guardian on June 20, 2005, makes clear that Cruise was addressing the disruption of an interview, not treating the spray as part of a consensual joke. What did Channel 4 say?
Channel 4 characterized the stunt as intended to be “light-hearted rather than malicious” and apologized to Cruise “for any offence that was caused.” The statement was quoted in The Guardian on June 20, 2005. That describes the broadcaster’s stated intent; it does not change Cruise’s objection to being sprayed during an interview. The Guardian report includes the statement.
Were charges pursued?
Four crew members were arrested and released on bail after the incident. Cruise later decided not to pursue the complaint. A contemporary report noted that police had not yet been informed of his decision at the time it was published, so the sequence should not be mistaken for an immediate decision at the scene. Did the reporter regret the prank?
The claim that “the reporter regretted” spraying Cruise is not established by the contemporary reports cited here. They describe the prankster offering a barely audible excuse, but do not report a clear expression of remorse. Those accounts also do not provide a verified name for him. It is therefore more accurate to say that regret and identity are unconfirmed than to present either as fact. The Guardian and the BBC cover the incident and its aftermath.
