The Indian Express and Scroll reported that she was 91; other contemporaneous reports gave her age as 93, and no independently verified birth date is established here.
Her work on stage and screen
Kaifi worked in theatre and film and was part of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and the Progressive Writers Association milieu. The Indian Express described her as one of the last key associates of both circles—a journalistic characterization of her place in that cultural community.
Among her reported screen credits are Garm Hava (1973), Umrao Jaan (1981), Baazaar (1982) and Saathiya (2002). These are representative titles, not a complete filmography.
A life shared with Kaifi Azmi
She was married to Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi. Their daughter, actor Shabana Azmi, and son, cinematographer Baba Azmi, were identified in The Indian Express’s report of her death.

Her memoir carried onto the stage
Kaifi’s memoir is known as Kaifi and I and Yaad Ki Rahguzar. It became the basis for the stage presentation Kaifi aur Main; the Azmi Kaifi family website describes the production as drawn from her memoirs.

Theatre director M. K. Raina told The Indian Express: “An era of progressive movement and culture went with her. She was among one of the last artistes to participate in the IPTA movement.” His words captured the sense of loss among people who had worked in, or valued, that progressive cultural tradition.
