Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers married in New York on May 9, 1987. In January 1990, they announced they had decided to end the marriage, but the public explanation did not identify the issues behind their decision. January 1990: They announce their decision to end the marriage
In a statement released through publicist Andrea Jaffe on January 16, the couple said they had decided to file for divorce. Their joint explanation was: “While there have been very positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time.” They did not specify what those issues were.
January 1990: Cruise asks for privacy
In the same Los Angeles Times report, Cruise explained that questions about the marriage put their privacy at stake: “When I was asked direct questions by the press about my marriage, I felt that to compromise our privacy was to compromise a basic trust.” He added, “I hope that can be understood.”

October 1990: Rogers is unsure whether the divorce is final
The Associated Press quoted Rogers as saying: “As far as I know, we’re divorced, but I’ve been so busy on this new film that I haven’t had time to check, so I’m not sure.” That remark reflects uncertainty about the paperwork; it does not establish a precise legal finalization date.

A January 21, 1990 Los Angeles Times media column noted that Cruise had spoken positively about working on the marriage in an interview conducted the previous November. That contrast shows how public accounts shifted over a short period, but it does not disclose the private reasons for the separation.

They do not establish a specific cause for the breakup or when and how Cruise and Rogers first met. Claims about private motives should not be treated as fact on the basis of this timeline.
