Why the tricky groups fit
Cracker Jack items
CARAMEL, PEANUTS, and POPCORN point to the snack; PRIZE completes the group because a prize is traditionally found in a box of Cracker Jack. It is the odd-looking member if you are expecting four foods.
“___ horse” phrases
CHARLEY, CRAZY, DARK, and GIFT form Charley horse, crazy horse, dark horse, and gift horse. This is a phrase-completion group, not a set of horse breeds or actual horses. Forbes writer Kris Holt noted that CHARLEY, rather than the more familiar spelling “Charlie,” caused some uncertainty while solving; that was the writer’s experience, not a measure of how difficult the puzzle was for everyone.

A practical way to approach overlapping words
Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four. The colors indicate the reported group categories and difficulty levels, and some words may seem to fit more than one possible grouping. Scan the whole bank before committing: jot down tentative pairs or trios, then check which remaining words make a coherent set of four. General game context and grouping mechanics are described in The New York Times Connections overview.
