January 14, 1952: David Garroway hosts the first broadcast
NBC describes Today as the first network early-morning show and identifies David Garroway as its first host. The program debuted live from RCA’s exhibition hall at Rockefeller Center in New York City. NBCUniversal’s account of the premiere gives the date as January 14, 1952.
The original studio’s expansive street-facing windows gave the set a distinctive public presence. NBCUniversal says they were nicknamed “The Window on the World”: the anchors could see people on the sidewalk, and passersby could look in. NBCUniversal’s retrospective describes the windowed studio as part of the show’s early identity.
A circa-1982 snapshot: five familiar faces
A photograph identified by the NAB Hall of Fame offers a glimpse of the Today team around 1982. Its caption names, from left to right, NBC News’ Jane Pauley, Bryant Gumbel, John Palmer, Willard Scott, and Gene Shalit. The NAB caption establishes who is pictured, but it does not provide a complete lineup or assign each person a specific role and tenure. It should be read as an archival moment, not a full history of the show’s anchors.

June 20, 1994: Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel open Studio 1A
On June 20, 1994, Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel anchored the debut from Studio 1A. NBCUniversal’s retrospective notes that President Bill Clinton appeared by satellite, while Mayor Ed Koch, Tom Brokaw, and Barbara Walters were among the broadcast’s inaugural guests. The studio retrospective records the opening as a defining change of setting for the program.
January 14, 2022: the 70th anniversary
Today reached 70 years on January 14, 2022, exactly 70 years after its first broadcast. Coverage of the anniversary described a special broadcast open, a retrospective, special guests, digital features, and an interactive online history experience. NewscastStudio’s anniversary coverage reports those elements of the celebration.

How the morning program grew
The Peabody Awards profile characterizes Today as a progenitor and prototype of the U.S. morning news and talk genre. It also traces the program’s expansion from a two-hour broadcast to four hours of content. The Peabody profile describes that evolution as part of the show’s broader influence.
NBCUniversal names Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb among the program’s hosts in its Studio 1A retrospective, alongside earlier figures such as Couric and Gumbel. Those names mark different moments in a long-running show; they do not, by themselves, constitute a full anchor-by-anchor timeline. NBCUniversal’s retrospective provides the cited host references.
