A full-sized digital scan of the Titanic wreck records its condition on the seabed in 2022. Documentary makers say an open steam valve in the model supports accounts that engineers kept power running after the ship struck the iceberg, helping send wireless distress signals and keep lights on. That interpretation suggests the engineers may have helped save lives—but the scan is not footage of the sinking, and it does not prove how many people they saved.
What the Titanic scan shows
Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions surveyed the wreck in summer 2022 using remotely operated submersibles controlled from a specialist vessel. The team photographed the wreck from multiple angles across its length and breadth, producing a detailed digital reconstruction of the site rather than another set of isolated views.
BBC News reported in May 2023 that the survey took more than 200 hours and collected more than 700,000 images. In its April 2025 announcement for the documentary Titanic: The Digital Resurrection, National Geographic specified 715,000 digitally captured images and 16 terabytes of data, gathered over three weeks in 2022. These are source-specific descriptions of the project’s scale: the BBC gave rounded figures, while National Geographic later published more precise totals. (BBC News, May 17, 2023; National Geographic / Disney Press, April 8, 2025)
The wreck lies about 3,800 metres (12,500 feet) beneath the Atlantic surface. Its bow and stern are separated by about 800 metres (2,600 feet), with a debris field around the two sections. The model brings the broader site into view in a way earlier camera visits, which yielded fragmentary snapshots, could not. It reconstructs the wreck’s surveyed state—not the moments when the ship was sinking.

Did Titanic’s engineers keep the lights on?
National Geographic’s 2025 documentary announcement says the team identified a steam valve in the open position. The production presents that feature as support for eyewitness accounts that engineers in boiler room two stayed at their posts for more than two hours after impact, keeping electricity available and allowing wireless distress signals to be sent.
The announcement says the 35 men “may have saved hundreds of lives while sacrificing their own.” The qualification matters: this is the documentary team’s interpretation, reported by National Geographic, not a proven count of lives saved or a finding that the scan independently establishes the engineers’ actions or intentions.

Global News’s report on the documentary analysis also describes an open valve on the stern and quotes Titanic analyst Parks Stephenson on the crew’s effort to maintain power and lights for safer lifeboat launches. That account is secondary reporting on the modern interpretation, not a verbatim finding from the 1912 inquiry. Stephenson told Global News, “Titanic is the last surviving eyewitness to the disaster, and she still has stories to tell.” (Global News, April 8, 2025, updated April 9, 2025)
What the scan can—and cannot—establish
The digital reconstruction records visible structures and objects as surveyed in 2022. Experts interpret those features and compare them with eyewitness accounts and historical documents. A valve’s position can contribute to that analysis, but the scan does not record the sinking, identify every person’s actions, or directly explain why a component was left as it was.

That distinction is especially important when discussing sacrifice. The engineers’ continued work is described in eyewitness accounts and the documentary’s interpretation of the scan; the claim that they may have saved hundreds of people remains tentative. The scan offers new physical evidence for study, but it is not by itself a complete account of the final hours.
How the scan relates to the 1912 inquiry
The British Wreck Commissioner’s 1912 report documents the damage and flooding based on the evidence available to the inquiry. It says all six compartments forward of No. 4 boiler room were open to the sea by damage about ten feet above the keel, and that the ship could not remain afloat with the four forward compartments and No. 6 boiler room flooded. Those findings explain the scale and consequences of the flooding; they do not independently verify the modern scan team’s interpretation of the valve. The inquiry’s annex records 37 public sittings and 97 witnesses. Those numbers describe the investigation’s proceedings, not casualty totals. The inquiry and the 2022 scan are different kinds of evidence, separated by more than a century: one records testimony and formal findings, while the other documents the wreck’s physical condition on the seabed. (British Wreck Commissioner’s Inquiry, “Annex to the Report,” 1912)
